Risk factors for Vitamin D Requirement:

Personal Background

Living at 41°-56°/living at over 56°/living at 24°-40° latitude
The body's main source of vitamin D is sunlight, but higher latitudes mean less available sunlight - especially during the winter. At most latitudes in the United States, little or no vitamin D is made in the skin in the late fall (autumn) and early winter. In the most northern regions, the vitamin D blackout lasts for about six months. As a result, it has been estimated that up to 70% of Americans (and Europeans) may be deficient in vitamin D. Only in the last several hundred years has urbanization, industrialization, glass (UVB does not penetrate glass), excessive clothes (UVB does not penetrate clothes) and sunblock greatly lowered levels.

you get vitamin D from tanning. There isn't much you can do about those annoying spots that dont create melanin....

try washing your hair with selsun blue or head and shoulders for a while, and buy California Tan's X Power for Body and X Appeal for face. They are great for combating the fungus, (which falls from your scalp and lays on your skin) 7 out of 10 times with 'spotting' it is usualy from fungi and is easily fixed by just changing shapoos and lotions and laying off the tingle lotions. Try a bronzing lotion.

Just went through this whole thread... for those of you that can't tan:

Just thought I'd vouch for the "Mystic" spray-on Tan you hear alot about now. If you can actually tan you don't need it (unless you worry about skin cancer and the bit of premature wrinkles that will inevitably occur).

I have primarily swedish and irish genes (from Minnesota originally - ja!) and I literally cannot tan. It is impossible, I've tried many times... I just kind of turn a reddish color.

Then along came Mystic Tan! For the first time in my life I can go in there and have a very nice tan in about 60 seconds. It only last four days so you kind of need a bank roll to keep it up, but from my personal experience I can't recommend it enough! Just be sure you really douse your fingernails and toe nails and bottom of your hands in the lotion they give you... otherwise they will go brown! (ewwwww) LOL.

How do the bigger people here tan?

I've tried beds a few times with weird results.  I am too wide from shoulder to shoulder to fit into a bed, and if I lay down sideways on a bed, then my sides get done for the most part, but I always seem to be uneven.

I haven't tried the stand-up ones yet, but those seem to me like they may be the only option.

I was wanting to tan for about 3 weeks this last spring, but gave up after 1 because the tan was coming in, yes, but it was so even it looked really weird.

SOOOO, I locked myself in a dark room for a few weeks and now I'm pale as a ghost again.  J/K.

I've tried all types of tanning.  The stand up would work best for you because it surrounds your whole body and you can hold your arms up or down to tan where needed.  It also takes less time since the bulbs are so intense, about six minutes instead of 12-20.  Also, if you just want to look great for a weekend, try spray.  It lasts for about four days and really works well, although it's a little pricey, about $25.00.

I didnt want to read all the bloody posts' becuase wowzors there has to be at least 80. But I went tanning this year, and subjected myself to ZERO RADIATON RAYS!!! They are new beds called "VELOCITYS" they tan for 15 minutes, and DO NOT USE UV-B RAYS, which are the cancer/burning rays that people get sick from. They DO NOT BURN you and CANNOT burn you. Trust me, I've used them 4x. After 4x I was approx 10 shades darking, using a scale of 0 being albino and 50 being black, I went from a 20, to a 30, and I'm caucasian. They work wonders, and are safe.

So does anyone else besides me feel like they are getting fleeced whenever they sign up for tanning?

I've never done the tanning thing before until Nav embarrassed me into it (damn that cat!).  SOooo, I read the helpful stuff here, and then choose LA Tan becaus there are two shops within 3-4 blocks where I live, and yet another 2-3 blocks from where I work.  I first signed up for the 1-month trial (their most expensive package/session).  I filled out a "skin-type" survey, but no one, and nothing anywhere explained the results.  Pointless.  The teenie boppers behind teh counter couldn't answer any questions.  They just wanted to swipe my credit card and shove me in a room.

The tanning is working, so I decided, what the hell, I'll convert the membership to something that is more reasonable/session.  I mention this, and immediately am given the hard sell.  No explanation of the different "membership levels" or how the promotion that she's offering me compares.  I quickly look around for something that summarizes the different membership levels (yeah, found a sign plastered on the counter), and did some quick math.  Turned out the promotion was a good deal, but thank God I can calculate fast in my head, or I would've signed up in total ignorance.

Oh yeah, and the first time I did a tanning session, I (stupidly) asked for a recommendation for lotion.  The teenie bopper recommended first a bronzer lotion (no, not that, thanks), and then this other stuff that costs $60/bottle.  I didn't even realize it until I was signing the credit card slip.  Damn.  I'd hate to see how much the first bottle she recommended would've cost.  What, $80? $100?  And it smells like synthetic cranberries.  Gross.  I don't want to go back to work smelling like farkin' cranberries.

Anyway, my point was, I always feel like I'm going to be/have been fleeced.  Anyone else have that experience?????

Hey all,

As you can see from my pic, i'm ginger and pale. lol.

Does anyone know of a light tan kit that I can use? And i'm talking really light, I don't want to look stupid with ginger hair and a dark tan. I've tried a few already just rubbing some on my chest and it turned yellow! lol

If anyone can suggest a good one, I will try it out. I'm in the UK, so preferably one that I can buy on UK eBay.

Thanks in advance.
