Sweating while lifting... - Wednesday, August 12, 2009 8:56 AM ( #1 )
I normally do not sweat while I lift weights and I just figured it was because I dont sweat very easily.  But now, I noticed that I do tend to break a sweat now on legs days.  Could it be that on the other days I am just not lifting hard enough or would you just attribute this to the fact that the legs are a bigger muscle group? Do you guys sweat when you lift?

I wouldn't concern yourself with how much you sweat. Temperature plays a role as does the overall load you are doing and energy expended, so leg days would heat you up more.  But don't worry about it.

When I am breathing heavily, I sweat a lot.  20 rep squats make me sweat like a bastard, and also make me breathe very heavy.

For a very long time, I did only low-rep/heavy work, with very long rest times between sets, and I didn't really sweat much.  I still gained a ton of size though.  Now, my training is more geared towards endurance, while still focusing on strength.  I start out with low rep/heavy weight, and I don't sweat much.  I end my workouts with moderate weight, higher rep, short rest time (high volume, low rest - typical bodybuilding stuff), and I sweat my ass off from heavy breathing.

So I don't know if I really answered your question, but does it mean you're not building muscle effectively if you're not sweating? Absolutely not.  Sweating, IMO, is just an indication that your heart rate is elevated.  Elevated heart rate is usually linked to calories burned, which is usually linked with fat loss.  But then again, eating at a caloric deficit will also yeild fat loss.

I'm grateful when I don't sweat. Makes my hands slippery and I get real hot, usually resulting in my nose bleeding.

Sweating is only your bodies natural way of cooling itself down though, not an indicator of nothing special.

Ok thanks guys.  I just wanted to make sure it wasnt because I wasnt lifting hard enough but I guess like Seoinage said, it must just be the amount of energy I'm using for legs as opposed to chest/back/shoulders/arms.
