Sustainability - Monday, October 19, 2009 2:50 PM ( #1 )
I'm writing this because sometimes we may pick a program and dislike it and hence not want to go to the gym.  I used to miss more leg days because of what I was doing. Other things can keep us out of the gym like the place we choose to work out at.  I have been consistent for a long time, but sometimes I have to drag myself.   For most people I imagine it would be best to find something they really enjoy and stick with it and when they need to make changes make sure it fits into something that they can keep doing.

I've been doing 20 rep squat program for a few weeks, and yeah it is challenging and intense, but I feel like I don't want to go work out and don't want to go through the pain it brings me.  So should I do another 4 weeks on it, or go back to my Westside program?  I kind of stopped drinking all the milk, I gained 6 lbs in the first two weeks, and I'm afraid to get too fat, although I want to cut and be more trim I still have more muscle that needs to get put on.  I even have problems with the place I go to work out at, its far better than anything else around although it is really lacking, and I don't even have a membership, been using free passes I got from an employee and if I switch back to westside I have to pay 5 bucks each time I go once I run out of these.

So what do you guys think?  Is it worth it to do an extremely intense workout that will eventually result in you stopping working out or do something more enjoyable that still gives you results.

side note.
I dunno if people remember me talking about starting my own gym, but I have been working on it whenever I get the chance, I actually have a warehouse  available to me that is 2000 sq ft and I am working on drawing up how I want the office and bathroom and things built.  It is $850 a month, plus some other fees.  I still don't have financing figured out yet but I am getting closer, equipment is almost all decided upon but some of the strongman equipment and deadlift platforms and other gym items I am going to be building myself.  Hopefully this will cure my problem with where to lift, but also work as a business like I have planned.  I have been trying to talk to local high school football coaches but no one wants to call me back.  I did talk to someone recently that graduated and their aren't any summer strength camps in the area, and all they do is a little conditioning before the school year starts, plus there coaches just let them loose in the gym and don't give them any structure or training.  All good news for me considering my knowledge and having a 8 week summer program could be really useful to them, and of course help pay to keep the place running.

Man of you hate your routine you should change it I think. And good luck with starting a gym. I think the highschool football crowd is a very profitiable market. My parents wouldn't mind paying for my brother to go to training camps when he was paying high school ball.

I hate to say this to you of all people, but man up and dont be a pussy.

I mean we all have those days where we would rather do nothing, or find a million and one reasons not to go to the gym...but we just have to have the will power to make ourselves go.

You may not like it, but I would stick it out until the duration or you stall. Dont give yourself a reason to quit, and IMO this program is one of those bragging right programs, where you should get a medal for completing or going until you cant physically go anymore.

Just keep positive and find something to look forward to. If your worried about fat, simply cut your calories down some.

by the by, that gym idea sounds great and if we lived near each other I would want to invest/go in it with you. I would love to own my own gym someday, right now the plan is sometime in my 40's find a place and do it.

i did the 20 squat rep just one time. dont know if you remember that or not.  dude, i know you wanna finish that program.  just do it.
so, i've been on and off checkin out things here even without posting as much as i used too.  its really funny, cuz most of the posts are pretty redundant.  same posts/questions people had a year ago LOL.  anyways, i've gotten myself to where i've started strength training again and pretty excited about it.  where is your gym going to be?? i sure hope not up in logan area.  i've got some numbers in bountiful if you want that would actually advertise your gym.  its sad that a powerlifting type gym would not appeal to the masses here at first, but i think it will hit hard once people see it.  i mean come on, utah is one of the top supplement producing states LOL.  twinlabs is just down the street from where im at now and i'm sure you've seen it.  good luck with the gym and keep me posted.

Glad you are getting back into things.  The property I am looking at is off of redwood in NSL.  I would love any help I can get to get this thing rolling.  I know it won't appeal to the masses but every time I use bands or do something crazy in the gym everyone gets really interested, so I think it could catch on.  There is one other property i really like in bountiful but I think it would be too expensive, they haven't called me back about it yet.

I really just shouldn't be a pussy, but man it is hard, I know you can do the program 3 times a week for 6 weeks or 2 times a week for 8 weeks if you stuggle to recover, and if I cut calories I might just have to limit it a bit.

Edit: you are right about the same questions etc, I have slowed down posting as most things others can answer easily and I get tired of repeating myself.

Just imagine how good and relieved you will feel once you have finished your program.

It being hard just makes it more of Accomplishment.

I tried to do a 20 rep set the other day with 250 lbs....I got to 11, and I was shaking....If I would have made it to 20, I would have puked and then died probably.  I give anyone props if they do that program.  That s*** it brutal!

A sense of fulfillment is derived when you are able to finish your workout program. Not only that, you also gained a better body figure by then

If I kept drinking the gallon of milk and finished the program I would have weighed 235+ lbs and would be a fat monster.  I like my speed and heavy training, although taking a break to do this program for a short while wouldnt be so bad. I can't finish it right now especially with getting married in a few weeks and my fiancee freaking out about how big I am getting and she doesn't want to get crushed.  I told her I would probably one day weigh like 250 lbs if I felt like it and to get over it

20 rep squats, well they really are a test of a man I can't blame you for feeling apathetic about doing them - I've never even attempted them personally but know how bad 10 reps feels!

I can do high rep squats and deads. For some reason, I absolutely hate benching over 5 reps or so. I am weak with high volume on the bench. Sucks.
