I lift on Monday's and Thursdays and do Cardio every day. I am curious to know does any one take protein shakes on thier non-lift days? If so, why and if not why not? I used the search engine on this site to try and get this answered but all I came up with is what supplements to use, and use them when you lift but I couldnt see any thing to say if you needed to continue taking the supplement on you non-lift days to help with muscle recovery/building. Any ideas folks? Thank you.

Your muscles grow only during periods of rest like sleeping and days off. Protein is supplemented only when you are taking in insufficient quantities with your normal diet. When you determine your necessary protein intake it's part of your daily diet. Daily. Whether you are working out or not.

But you need more protein to build than to maintain, correct? So on the non-lift days does the amount of building protein have to stay the same as lift days because the whole time between lift days is........ the process of building/repairing? So when I decide I have reached my goal weight or size, I will decrease my protein intake to a maintainence level? Thank you.

You should be eating protein in one form or another at every meal: Eggs whites and beef or turkey for breakfast, a protein shake mid-morning, chicken, fish or beef for lunch (with a good mix of vegetables and carbs), a protein shake mid-afternoon and fish, chicken, fish, turkey and again, a good mix of vegetables and carbs. This is a weightlifter's and bodybuilder's basic daily diet. You need as much protein as you can get. If your pee suddenly turns brown, maybe then you've had too much. I have been on this type of eating plan for nearly a year. It works. I have stayed lean while adding muscle mass. One final thought. Should you only take your vitamines on workout days?

Well, I take my vitamins daily as recommended...kinda sounds like a commercial but I do. I eat 5 times daily and drink 120oz water regularly spaced through out the day. Thats the best I can do as I work in a high tech indusrty and working my schedule any more than I do would take a friggin genius, which I am not... :) I typically eat high protein mid morning and small carb/protein turkey based snack before I work out, be it lifting or cardio, then an hour after I work out I have a protein shake and another small carb/protein turkey based snack with cold veggies. Then about 2 hours later I eat again and two and a half hours later again, but that last meal is typically carb/protein/vege based and light. Its just on the days I am not lifting I was trying to find out should I be taking my protein shake after my cardio workout? On a different note, has anyone has gas issues with Whey Protein supplemental shakes? I tell you what, I could kill a Rhino at 50ft most days now and it didn't start until I started drinking the "Whey Protein" supplemental shake.

This is very true. You should get yourself into a routine of eating protein at every meal. On training and non-training days.
