Substitute for Salmon - Thursday, March 18, 2004 1:47 PM ( #1 )
I've read in numerous places to eat salmon at least 2-3 times per week because it contains special omega-3 fats that help muscles retain glutamine, which is an anticatabolic amino acid. But I personally cannot STAND the taste, smell, even the LOOK of salmon.. It's gross. In fact the only seafood I eat is sushi and shrimp... Is there anything else I can eat to get the same benefits as salmon?

Tuna.

Actually, you really shouldnt eat fish 2-3x's per week, maybe like 2-3x's a month, ( Canned Tuna is ok though ) because the fish contain metals and other little things that can screw you up, if you eat that much for an extended period of time, years, but not if you do it for a few months or whatever

God, I can't remember exactly, I learned it in school a long time ago, but I can't remember!

Anyways, TUNA

Specifically, FATTY tuna. Unfortnetely, it seems like the fattier the fish, the more mercury it likely has. The most popular types of sushi are salmon and tuna though...

I take fish oil capsules at bedtime myself.

***Actually, you really shouldnt eat fish 2-3x's per week, maybe like 2-3x's a month***

That's not true....it really only applies to certain fish...

Sword fish, Tuna, Salmon, king mackerel, marlin, shark, and a few others...

Eating fish 2-3 times per week is perfectly healthy. MANY people eat fish 2-3 times a week. Just stick to some of the smaller fish. Flounder, Orange Roughy and Cod are excellent fish. I'm no fish expert or antyhing, but I know that much for sure.

I'm supprised that you can eat sushi (I take it you don't like sashimi then?) but can't eat Salmon. In any case, just like Power said, you can easily get your Omega fatty acids from fish oil supplements.

Furthermore, canned tuna isn't considerably safer than fresh tuna....read below, and in general, just do some searches on canned tuna and read reliable sources on studies and what not.....hell even the FDA has a section on canned tuna.
