Strength Training and Nutrition - Tuesday, July 22, 2008 6:42 PM
Alright so I've said it before, I wanted to drop size training and actually go for perfomance but now I actually mean it, I really want to increase my weights with good form and all.

I still got more fireman tests to do and I didn't really improve much on certain lifts so I want to go harder on them. Also, Dana White (UFC president) announced that UFC was coming in Montreal which is were I live so I'd try go get in there... So performance again...

I didn't seem to get much size gain lately and that I think is because I neglect my diet but not to the point to be starving.. I was wondering, if I want to go towards strength gaining and power, do I still need to eat as a beast ?

Also, I've got a beep test coming soon, my personnal record is 19 and I want to get to 24.5 which is the academy's record. I never really trained for the beep test it just happened but damn, at 19 you really want to die... I've been wanting to train on this by doing some regular running and HIIT but apparently I wouldn't gain any advantage out of them because HIIT and just running is.... like i say just running while beep tests ( in high levels if i may say) you need to fully stop a mass ( 170 lbs in my case) and get it going back shorter than 2 seconds....

( getting the beep test to practice aint a solution I can't have it)

sooo recap:

1) is nutrition as important in strength gaining than bbing

2) is there a way to prepare for a beep test?

3)any beginner routine for strength would be what, bill starr and ripptoes 5x5?

that is the beep test.

Basically theres 20m distance between two lines.
You have to reach the other side on the beep sound, before the second sound pops ( don't be in the middle of the lines when the beep pops).

In the first levels it's fairly easy, you can easily walk/jog till around 3 i'd say... but at some point you really need to sprint it really hard.

The best way I can imagine to get at a beep test is to do it. Practice stopping and starting while working on your endurance.

I agree, I always feel the best way to do something is to try practicing exactly how to do it.

I think you would also benefit from wind sprints

We'll maybe I didn't get really... sharp enough on the question.

I don't want to be a big named in powerlifting I just want to increase my lifts a little by little...

When you train for size basically you diet needs to be flawless... miss this and that you might lose some pounds that u could've easily gotten in the end of the month(exemple)... While my question was If I don't eat as I want to get bigger am I still going to be increasing my lifts? ( I want to bench the double of my body weight and apparently squats and deads should be higher than bench so they have to follow obviously.)

Great question man. I'm curious as well because I wanna start training for strength once tennis season starts.

I found the best way to prepare for a beep test is by doing long distance running, in the end thats the whole point of the test. Try that and your score should improve! o ya, nice score by the way 19 is a great score!

The reason why power lifters aren't exactly small is that they don't cut.

their nutrition is totally important and they eat huge, they are just not going to allow themselves to have any muscle catabolism. They care about the lifts more than the striations of their muscles.

When a big bodybuilder cuts for a comp they lose strength, strength that a power lifter can't afford to lose.  They may need to stay with in a weight class, so their diet would be checked appropriately.

You can stay the same size (read eat at maintenance calories), and gain strength, but your nutrition, still needs to be outstanding, for you to reap benefits.
