Strength & Calorie Deficit - Tuesday, July 31, 2007 6:34 PM ( #1 )
So I'm on a calorie deficit right now trying to cut down the 11% bf I have, and basically just get a ****load stronger. I would rather be 150lb, lean, smaller, very quick, and very strong than just huge.

But my question is, on a 500 calorie deficit, is it still possible to gain strength and maybe some small muscle mass? I've read on another reliable site that if you lift heavy (which obviously strength lifting is heavy) you don't lose muscle mass while cutting, and possibly gain some.

It's possible, but don't count on it. I've been cutting for a few months now and I've actually gained a fair amount of strength, but I've lost a little muscle size.

The amount of muscle you keep depends on your protein intake moreso than the workouts.
With a 500 calorie deficit you'd be LUCKY to gain muscle, strength is very possible however.

My most recent cut consisted of a 100 calorie deficit but I still gained a tiny bit of muscle mass and a fair bit of strength, I broke a plateau on my Squat!
