Strained feeling in lower back
-
Monday, August 18, 2008 5:05 PM
"I have a couple of questions, first about my lower back. In my workout I start with squats, then do good mornings, bent over barbell row, and military press before moving on to other exercises. I have noticed a strained feeling in my lower erector region and have dropped significant weight off my good mornings and bent over row to compensate. Am I still risking injury by doing all these in the same workout?" any ideas? Im thinking form problem, or maybe he needs to stretch?

Try switching from Straight Bar Bent Rows to Dumb Bell Rows. Support yourself with a bench. You get a better range of motion and your lower back does not hold your upper body up through the movement. That should help some.

All of those exercises rely heavily on lower back. You friend may have a form problem or it may just be the volume of load that his erectors have to take. Simple things like switching to db or seated row instead of bent over bb row could give him the rest he needs to put weight back on the other exercises.

Do you use a belt? When my back starts hurting I use a belt for a week or two until it gets better.

Maybe try to spread those exercises out over the routine. I'm no expert, but I keep my squats and deadlifts as far away from each other because doing them back-to-back kicks my back's ass. Haha.
