Starting low in a squat? - Friday, June 20, 2008 1:05 PM
I don't like using the bench in my room for squating because the barbell holders being raised are probably much weaker than if they are down to the lowest position. I don't know if deadlifts work the quads enough so I'm wondering if it is safe to start a squat in a lower, knee bent, position, rather than standing.

Can I get away with this?
~195LBs, 5'11", BF% = high, 18%? 18.5Y/o
Deadlift: 255LB 1X2, 275Lb off floor, bailed out.
F-Bench:1X5, 185LB
Squat: 135LB

Deadlifts work your low back, quads, hamstrings and traps.  They pretty much hit the entire body.  As for starting the squat down low, I imagine that if you are able to get the weight up you'd be fine, but it isn't ideal.

It's not ideal, but you can do it

The thing is that it's a lot safer to load/deload the bar from your back when you're upright in a confortable position for your knees, hams, and back
Front Squat(atg)   5x165lbs
Bench                    5x150lbs
Deadlift

i dont have a squat rack either. i just set my bench bars as high as they go and put the bench in decline...not exactly the safest thing but hey, i love squats...and its also one of my worst lifts, at my weight i should be doing way more! skwat til you drop!
