Standing Military Press. Narrow grip or Wide grip?
-
Wednesday, October 08, 2008 11:23 PM
I have a question about where I should position my hands when I do the Standing military press. Should I go narrow-grip, wide-grip, or somewhere inbetween - where my wrists look like they're completely parallel towards the roof? Like this: | | <--- lol

when the bar is in the rack position on the top of your chest/shoulders, your hands should be placed so your forearms run parallel to the ground, so like a "l" like you said. for most people this is a narrow grip, much more narrow then say the bench press.

Don't forget that you need to feel confortable, adjust your grip in order to feel no pain in your wrists.

I think the way Rippetoe explained it was so your thumbs were about shoulder width apart.

JESTERx626 I have a question about where I should position my hands when I do the Standing military press. Should I go narrow-grip, wide-grip, or somewhere inbetween - where my wrists look like they're completely parallel towards the roof? Like this: | | <--- lol there are no correct answers... If I'm doing any type of seated OH press, I usually hit narrow, medium and wide grip. If I'm working strictly for strength and power, I do a standing military and use a shoulder width grip.
There is never enough time to do everything, but there is always enough time to do the most important thing

Just make sure your elbows past the bar when in the rack position...ripp explains this in starting strength...
"When your strength gains plateau, if you been training exclusively for limit strength/power, you'll need usable muscle mass to progress further."

listen to what everyone is saying but just do what feels most comfortable and you'll likely be about where you should be.
