Personally, I don't use a belt when squatting- I want all those muscles to get a workout, using a belt just takes some of the stabilizers out of the picture- If you decide to try squatting without a belt, definitely start out with a much lighter weight because those muscles won't be up to your normal amount. It could be the fit of the belt that's interfering with your breathing- But without seeing you do squats in person, it's hard to tell. With proper form, there should be no restriction when it comes to your breathing- Hell, even with bad form, I can't think of a position that would constrict your lungs to the point where you find it hard to breathe- It could also be a mental thing, because of the amount of weight- I know when I have a lot of weight on the bar, I really have to watch my breathing- The first time I'm attempting a new one rep max, I always feel as though if I let my breath out, I'm just going to collapse under the weight- But with the proper amount of concentration, it shouldn't be a problem- Good luck with those squats!
