I read where guys are squatting something like 345 lbs. They are not that big and bench less than that. I got to wondering if all of this 345 lbs. is sitting on their shoulders, or are they adding their body weight to the bar weight? From what I've been lifting, I can bench more than I can put on my shoulders, neverthless, squat and get back up! Thanks, Rack

I squat 380 for reps right now, and I bench 280- Totally normal. And no, I don't count bodyweight at all. The thing is, most people always seem to ask "What do you bench?" when they want to know how strong you are- Squats are a much better measure of overall body strength, since they use a lot more muscle than bench presses- Your squat weight should always be higher than your bench weight, it's just the way your body's built- The legs and back, which are heavily relied on during squats, are actually your body's strongest muscles- Provided you're working them properly. If you train for bench and don't squat, obviously your bench weight is going to be more impressive than your squat weight- But if you train both areas equally, you'll be able to handle a lot more weight with your squat. quote:
From what I've been lifting, I can bench more than I can put on my shoulders, neverthless, squat and get back up! Let me know if I'm wrong here, but if by "put on my shoulders" you mean lift the weight from the floor over your head and place it on your shoulders, that's not how you should be squatting at all- You need to use a squat rack or a cage where you can load up the weight on the rack and position yourself under it- There's simply no way I could pick up 380 pounds and place it on my shoulders.

I understand now, and that goes to what I was thinking. I would have a hard time getting that kind of weight over my head and onto my shoulders. Most of these "squaters" I'm reading about are using weight machines. I use freeweights only as I don't have machine at the house, and I don't belong to a gym.
