Spinning and Yoga on non lift days - Tuesday, October 06, 2009 1:33 PM ( #1 )
Ok so like everyones main objective my goal is to be strong and cut at the same time. Im old enough to know that this is no easy task and can't really be done at the same time. Im aware of cutting and bulking phases and everything else. I guess my question is how beneficial are these two things to getting cut or being able to lift.

I spin to lose the fat and I do yoga to stay flexible so I can have a large range of motion when I lift.

Further narrowing my question, How beneficial is doing cardio like spinning or eliptical? I know that it can take away from muscle mass but I have been maintaining the past three weeks. Thoughts?

It will only be detrimental if you abuse it.. if you stick to your cardio for 20-30 mins for two days a week I honestly see no harm as far as  losing muscle mass as long as you are training hard. Would be nice if you shared your training program and how you incorporate both the yoga and the cardio machines.

nothing wrong with it. I wouldnt surpass 1 hour of intense cardio and be warry of 45mins-1hr of intense cardio everyday if the goal is to put on mass.

Ideally you would just want to just lift eat and sleep if the only goal was muscle. However, you said you have been maintaining and just aiming to lose fat which is fine.

unless your starving yourself, have a terrible diet/meal timing I wouldnt worry about losing muscle mass until your BF is down into the single digits.

Mon is chest
tue is back
wed is legs
thurs is shoulders
fri is arms

Most days are four to 6 exercises. One warm up set then everything is a set of 6 and a set of 4 using time under tension. count three on the way down then right back up. Usually ill bike or use an eliptical for 20 minutes or so sometimes 30. Ill do yoga mondays and tuesdays after i lift to cool down and stretch out. its not very demanding on the muscles the way weightlifiting is. Ill do a spin class on wednesday usually.

sat and sunday are abs and cardio. abs then about 45min of cardio and ill do forarms and calves (Im a gym rat I cant help not lifting a little something)

It's good you are able to incorporate yoga into your workout. This brings a feeling of peace to you and may help on days that you are training really hard.
