Some strongman training vids - Saturday, February 21, 2009 2:14 PM ( #1 )
For the people who don't read my journal I have been training for a strongman competition on April 19 for my school.  Here are some vids of yesterday's work.

Jeep Push - Nobody was steering so I couldn't go too far without the jeep going off the road, but you get the point.  This was with one click up on the e-brake.

Tire Flip - Contest is the most flips with a 300lb tire in 2 minutes.  I did it 26 times in my first 2 minute attempt.  Hopefully I can break 30 by contest time.

I didnt see this in the journal. Must catch up.
Not long to go. Do you have an idea of the best attempts at previous meetings? Would be a good guide to how you would compare to others in each event.
On the tire lift, the weight looked easy for you but wonder if your endurance is letting you down? Guess for the tire flip, the best way to train is with a tire flip but maybe you could also try some speed rowing, sprints, interval running, dragging etc. to get in condition. Are you planning a rest/maintainance period shortly before the start?

This is the first time my school is having this event.  They usually have a powerlifting competition but this year it is strongman stuff so I have nothing to compare to.  The tire flip is easy weight and yes I did gas out at the end.  I'm gonna be doing some uphill sprints with sandbags to help with the endurance aspect of it.  I will also take a week off before the contest to try and cut any water weight off before the weigh-in and to rest up.

Sandbags are awesome for strength training. They bend, fold, flop so that no rep is the same in a lift. And, as you need to grasp and tug at it to get a hold, it works all sorts of grip strength. Use them as much as you can.

Have you noticed any differences e.g., in the way you feel, strength, energy, fitness, flexibility... after doing this type of training compared to the old iron and bars indoors? I'm wondering of doing something similar in the summer.

Good luck. Would be good to have videos captured during the contest.

Besides the obvious endurance aspect of it I feel like this has more of a functional "real world" aspect to it.  Telling someone you deadlift/squat 500-600 might seem impressive to you but to someone who doesn't lift it doesn't really click.  However if you go and pick up a refrigerator and carry it on your back for 100 ft they kind of get the point.

Also these exercises blast my core like no workout I've done in the gym.  Especially the ones that involve carrying something 200+ and speed walking with it across a field without falling on your face.  They really seem to test me mentally as well.  I think they'd be a good supplement or change of pace to any routine.

I'm planning on having the gf record the whole event so I'll post those vids up when the time comes.

Nice.

i'd push my jeep too but its a TJ and really light lol.    Where  did you happen to find a tire?  I've been looking (not very hard lol) for about a month or so.
