Sodium and Muscle Growth? - Tuesday, June 30, 2009 8:28 AM ( #1 )
I've been wondering this for a while. I know you need sodium in your body. And too much is bad for your heart and stuff. But does sodium have any effect on muscle growth? If so how much do you want to have if trying to bulk up? Or does sodium pretty much do nothing and I am wasting my time on this post?

Sodium helps muscle growth by making your food taste good enough to eat lots of it :)

Seriously, you probably don't need to worry much about it.  If you're already paying enough attention to your diet that you ask a question about sodium of all things, you are probably eating well enough that it isn't an issue for you.  If you're training hard, sweating, and drinking water, you're going to be able to handle a little more than most people, anyway.  You're 13, don't sweat the small stuff.

You don't need to be monitoring your sodium intake that closely.  Don't add salt to your food.  Sodium that occurs naturally in foods is plenty for you.  Sodium and potassium play a role with the way your body processes water.  Though too much sodium is bad, too little is also bad.  It can lead to a condition called hyponatremia.  About 500 mg per day is sufficient for the average person.  Monitor it for a day.  I would put money on the fact that you take in a lot more than that.  The American Heart Association says "Aim to eat less than 2,300 mg of salt per day. Some people — African Americans, middle-aged and older adults, and people with high blood pressure — need less than 1,500 mg per day."
