So i know a dude, and im buying his guitar, no idea what model, no idea what amp, no idea about ANYTHING, so can you guys run by me some standardised knowledge of guitars and amps and general things i should be looking out for? Hes not going to con me i know that, considering how close we are lol, he got it and hes one of them people who gives up after an hour, so its brand new a couple years ago and has been in the attic since, so basically its a non played guitar from my knowledge that has simply collected dust. Im paying $200 for it, with case, amp, plectrums etc etc. That good?

For a beginner guitar, ya, I wouldn't spend more then $200. See if you like it, learn to play, and then worry about getting good equipment. For now, go for the cheap stuff just so you can learn. If you decide to get serious about it after a while then I can help you out and tell you what/what not to get.

You could buy a brand new one at that price FYI. But if you wanna help him out and you said he hardly ever uses it, that's cool. You should get him down to $150 tho. That's still a fair price.

barre chords will just come with practice, its probably the high notes youre smudging so just focus on pressing harder i suppose...also maybe try just the high four notes and building from there i duno then, get a capo and you dont need barre chords haha twisted-itd be cheaper to get a starter acoustic, functionally they are probably harder to play by a bit (fret board size and frets) so youd learn better, regardless pay under 200 for that stuff like has been said

Twisted-man, just go to a local guitar hole-in-the-wall shop (if they have them over there) and pick up an acoustic. Start out with acoustic then get electric. Trust me, youll be 10x better if you start on acoustic. Good Luck. EDIT: oh snap, Edrice said it already. oh well.

When I play barre chords, the entire fingernail-portion of my index finger is above the fretboard. That way, the lower part of the finger (the stronger part) is playing the 2 high notes.

ed is right, capo's make impossible chords possible. They also offer their own unique sound that can't be completely imitated w/o the capo. I have made some amazing songs with a capo

Barre chords are movable chords, a capo changes the key and pitch of the open strings. You can't use a capo to play movable chords. Some people never learn barre chords, they get by just playing open triads etc. I heard that once you get past 21 the small bones in your hands fuse and you can't form intricate chords.

eh well ive already bought the guitar now for $160 so...lol I dont really like the sounds of acoustic guitars. I like the sound of electric guitars, which is going to make you experts laugh at me a lot. Why the **** does this guitar of mine not have that "distortion" sound, it just sounds like a loud acoustic, thats damn well it. Is it the guitar? the amp? the lead? I have no clue of this stuff and i want that distortion sound...It was invented in 1950-60 something so id assume all amps have it nowadays, i have a button that says O.D whatever that is. EDIT:The O.D. button does nothing! fantastic! LOL. I have a feeling the O.D button stands for something distortion, and the amp is simply shyte and wont work...the amp isnt new, the guitar is Somones gonna get a visit from twisted and we all know what my tempers like doo be doo be do It doesnt matter much if the equipments broken, i can take it back and get my money back...considering he wouldnt really wanna piss off a 6ft 190lbs dude who deadlifts 425lbs

O.D. stands for overdrive, which is the sound you are looking for. Make sure the volume knob on the guitar is turned all the way up, and make sure the volume on the amp is loud enough. Because if the volume is really low on the amp, the signal won't be strong enough to be distorted.
