Sliced turkey breast

Is sliced turkey breast a good source of lean protein? Basically the stuff you would get from a deli.
I saw that it was mentioned on the Master Grocery List thread, but in parenthesis it says "no deli meat".

It's probably not as good as turkey breast but it is still good . . .
Think when they refer to deli meat they probably mean things like salami etc with high fats in them :)

What's wrong with salami...I mean apart from the preservatives it's a tasty meat. Sure it has fat but all good meat does. And what's wrong with it having fat? We all eat fat here don't we? I think there's too much emphasis on lean meats these days, lean meat = bland meat.

I don't think the fat is the problem more so than the sodium, with regards to deli meat.

It's the nitrates, sodium, and all the other crap they put in as fillers that's the problem not the actual meat itself. Just have it in moderation and try to have wholesome lean meats for your protein like chicken breast, fish, and lean red meat.

It is better than eating fast food. If thats all you got then do it. The higher quality brands usually have less additives and some make a reduced sodium turkey breast as well.

ok fair enough in terms of deli meats, but I was also aiming at meats such as lamb, chicken thighs etc...Why don't people eat this stuff. It's the tastiest you can get, and much cheaper too.

I hate the whole nitrite deal. Does anyone know anywhere in the UK you can get italian meats without the nirtrite/nitrates?

Unfortunately it is the cheapest and most commonly used preservative. Also appears it could be a recipe for cancer when paired with proteins, which is also unfortunate because that is what it is most commonly used to preserve. A common brand here in the US is Boarshead. I am pretty sure they do not use any nitrates.
