Sleep.. - Thursday, June 26, 2008 11:38 PM
Ok I know that you need a good 8 hours of sleep or more to rebuild but I remember having this conversation with one of my teachers. She said that if you sleep lets say from 3 am - to 12pm its not as good as a quality sleep as from 11 pm - 8 am and isnt as good for your body. I diasgreed with her and was wondering if anybody knows if this is true or not because lately I've been going to bed like 3 or 4 in the morning(partying and stuff ya know its the summer) but to make up for it I've been waking up like at 1 to 2 oclock.

I disagree. Your body is set up in a certain way that it reaches the highest peak of growth hormone stimulation at certain time.

I am sure I heard it somewhere that it is best for you to have already been asleep at 2 AM to take advantage of the growth hormone spike.

It does matter when you sleep. Roughly around 10PM-2AM your body physically repairs itself. 2AM-6AM is mental and the repair of nerves.

This is incorrect.  Humans have evolved to go to sleep when the sun goes down and wake up when the sun comes up.  Biological clocks are genetically programmed physiological systems that allow organisms to live in harmony with natural rhythms, such as day/night cycles and the changing of seasons. The most important function of a biological clock is to regulate overt biological rhythms like the sleep/wake cycle. The biological clock is also involved in controlling seasonal reproductive cycles in some animals through its ability to track information about the changing lengths of daylight and darkness during a year.  The suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) lies just above the optic chiasm (a crossing of nerves running to the eyes) and receives input from the eyes which it uses to synchronize body rhythms with the external rhythm of night/day.  The SCN regulates not only sleep but also circadian rhythms of hormone secretion, urine production, body temperature, and other functions.  If you disrupt your sleep/wake-dark/light rhythm, you can screw up hormone production and other biological functions.  Here is a good overview of why sleeping when you are supposed to is important...

True story, I've been sleeping around 9:30 PM (there are exceptions to this such as when I have work)and I've started to feel a LOT better. You feel as if you have so much more energy and the day just feels longer and more fulfilling.

Last year I used to sleep at 4:30AM ~ and wake up at ~ 2:00 PM. HoRRIBLE! I wish I knew this back then. I used to feel all messed up but was too arrogant to change my routine.
Oh well, now I know :).

Yes I should probably do the same but I dont have the will power. I  love stayin uo to 3 or 4 whether I'm out partying or I'm home watching TV it doesn't matter. I might slowly start changing my hours so my summer sleep pattern wont be messed up and I don't become sleep deprived.

Some of us like to go out and have a good time. 9:30 in the summertime??? If you are 18 or above, I feel bad for you.

NOTE: I have the same gains when I am going to sleep at 1 or 2 rather than 9 or 10. Real talk.

RE: Sleep.. - Sunday, June 29, 2008 11:12 PM
Ive heard it all now. I have not slept from 10-11pm until 6-7am since 1980. I get 8 hours at different times than anyone else. I started working midnights in the military 0001-0800 or 2300-0700. At times I worked 1800-0600. Currently I work 1445-1245. I get plenty of rest just at a different time. Your body adapts, just as it does when you train. Thats why we change our workouts. If you are use to sleeping at a different time, as long as you get 8 hours, it completes its sleep pattern the same. To put a best, better time frame to sleep....heck if that was true I would weight 180lbs and be worn out. The only thing the day does is help your vitamin D. Currently I hit the rack at 0400 and wake at 1200. 8 hours is 8 hours. No I don't suck blood to survive either!

First thing you have to understand, time is a man made thing. All you need is 8 hours sleep if u are awake for 16 hours.

I never said that you have to go to bed at 10 every single night....I doubt most people go out with their friends past 11 pm EVERY NIGHT of the weekday, especially with school/work.  Many people will sit and watch TV until 4 a.m. every single night by themselves, or play World of Warcraft until dawn.  I go to bed at a reasonable hour 4 or five nights out of the week, and stay out as late as I want 2 or 3 nights.  It seems that everyone likes to come to extreme conclusions.  For some people, the norm is to go to bed every day at 4 a.m.  All I am saying is that it is a good idea to make the norm 10 or 11 pm, and have a few nights to stay out as late as you want.  Nobody is telling you to be asleep at 10 every single day.

RE: Sleep.. - Monday, June 30, 2008 6:26 AM
Its amazing how your body can adapt.  Overall whatever choice you make for when or how you sleep given enough time your body will adapt to that schedule.  For example last September I had to start waking up at 5:00am every morning.  At first I couldn't get to bed before 11:00pm, and usually stayed up till midnight.  But, after around a month my body changed and now I get tired no matter what at 9:00pm and wake up naturally at 5:00am every morning weather its still dark out or not.

The only key here that I can stress is watch the caffeine and energy drinks if they effect you.  Stuff like that can throw off the way your body handles sleeping situations.

When the sun goes down your body quits producing Serotonin and starts producing melatonin aka the sleep hormone.

Therefore sleeping not at night is bad for your body and it has been proven to age you faster.
