Sleep sweats = muscle growth? - Friday, June 26, 2009 2:01 PM ( #1 )
I usually work out early morning or midday.  That afternoon, particularly if I've had an intense workout (legs especially) I'll get extremely tired and get this urge to take a nap.  When I'm able, I do.  As soon as I stop moving, my body gets warm, slightly stiff, and a hard-to-describe tingly feeling.  I usually sleep very soundly when this happens.  When I wake up, sort of woozy still, the sheet and pillow are very wet with sweat.  Room temp and how covered I am don't make a difference.  Are these signs that muscle growth is taking place?  Does anyone else experience this?

First off, I was expecting more biting wit, along the nocturnal emissions line of thought.
Depends (adult diapies) would actually come in handy:  I could just pee away and not have to get out of bed to do it.  I take it you don't get these sleep sweats?

While working out, you increase your body temperature. Even several hours after you ended it, your body still is activated and devellops heat.

It's normal, don't worry, just make sure you drink a lot of water every day

Light on your skin might make it feel hotter than it really is, turn out the lights on a hot day, block out the sun, keep your legs out from under the covers and it should take the heat right out.

The stiffness and tingling you describe sounds a lot like "old hag" and sleep paralysis, common for people who practice lucid dreaming. Imagine your body becoming 50,000 needles with half of them going up and the other half down, like a frictionless motor, they repeat the motion over and over... *shivers*

jmbs how old are you and what supplements are you taking? When I was 20 I used to experience strange things when I took naps and slept, I literally felt like my muscles were growing, probably were too because that most likely was my prime.  Wish I had the hormones I had then now.

Seoinage,
I'm 45.  Supplements:  Protein powder, Creatine/punch mix, Gainer, Glucosamine Chondroitin (joints), Multivitamin, C, E, Calcium. Fish Oil/Omega 3.  I'm going to start taking additional Glutamine.  Any other recommendations, preferably inexpensive?
I did a substantial squat/back/hamstring/calf workout this morning.  I'm going to try to do some sets of squats every workout and see if the supposed testosterone boost helps me out.  I'll be interested to see if the drowsiness and sweaty nap happen this afternoon.
That warm, tight, feeling is obviously related to muscles worked.  It's those muscles I feel it in.  It's the hardest feeling to describe, sort of like my muscles are being cooked in a microwave or something.

Yes.  CONSTANTLY.  Really irritating, too, waking up in the middle of the night sticking to the sheets.

I put it down to elevated metabolism, increased water and carbohydrate intake, and environment (still haven't found a Goldilocks solution as far as bed dressings are concerned -always either too hot or too cold).

Veg,
What do you think of my supplement stack?  Anything to add or anything a waste of $?
Thanks!

P.S.:  There's a ****load of raw broccoli on the kitchen counter for me to dive into!  Also got lean burger, tilapia, whole grain pasta.  Got that cookbook Muscle Chow and am going to try out some recipes!

Naw, I have no complaints about any of that.  I should probably start taking glucosamine myself

I have, for the past decade or so, been averse to the idea of gainer shakes, but now that I'm eating like a polar bear in a daycare center and still finding gaps in my caloric intake, I think it might be time to bring one of those back on my supplement stack as well.

About the only thing I can think of that I don't see a lot of people doing (but maybe should, myself included) is some kind of liver support supplement and something for kidney health.  Key Riced, with the amount of nitrogen we jam through those bad boys, it seems to make sense.

Polar bear in a day care center?  Have you gone from herbivore to carnivore on us?  Tasty toddlers?  If our "stacks" get too high we'll all turn in to Dow chemical plants!

That's an old Naviator-ism.  Polar bears make a nice visual, but "dingo in a daycare center" works just as well.

I suppose I should find an equally amusing herbivorous analogy, but I'm coming up with blanks.

Yes, herbivorous analogies are, alas, few and far between.  :(
Hmmm...Boll weevil in a cottonfield, maybe?  Lacks a certain umph.
I'll keep thinking...

I took the glucosamine last summer and really liked it, took a long time for it to have an effect and it had other little strange side effects with how my body reacted to it.  I don't feel like I have needed it since then although my joints have been aching pretty good lately.  As far as supplements I like to add 500 mg of magnesium to my multi each day, most multies have hardly any.  Only other thing that I take besides you is beta-alanine.  I usually take it with my creatine post workout or sometimes pre.  It seams to work well, but your creatine might have some in it, it also takes a couple weeks for it to really kick in.  There is one other that is similar to those but forgot what it was called, maybe acetyl L carnitine or something like that, i don't take it but heard good things, whatever it was one of the words started with a c, need to do some research but no time atm.

Thanks man!  I'm going to see my GNC guy this week and I'll see what I can pick up.
Magnesium, beta alanine, and acetyl L carnitine will be on my list.

Since I switched up workout styles (Less rest inbetween and more reps) I have had to sleep on top of the covers, otherwise I get hotter. When I was doing high weight, low reps I was normal.

Oh, Check out Cissus for your joint needs. Its one pill that does the same, if not better than the other three (MSM,Glucosamine, Chondroitin)

I buy a gnc brand magnesium, fairly decent price.  Not sure if they really have the others alone or not.  1fast400.com usually has a deal where you get 10 lbs of protein and 1 kg of beta alanine in a combo for pretty cheap.
