Greetings all, I a newbie here. A friend of mine recommended this forum and this is really a great resource. Iam 5'6 and weighs 140 lbs. I have always been thin all my life and through years of abuse (food and beer) i have a gained a lot of stomach fat. Now since iam thin, a big belly makes me look pregnant (no kidding).. My goal for this year is gain body mass and lost my beer gut. I have read the posts regarding this issue but i'm still not sure what i should do? Iam have read Schteevie's bulking guide and danmirage's nutrition guide (thanks guys). The fitness exposed guide recommended doing either weight gain or lose belly fat at a time. Iam not sure what i should do? Following schedule was recommened at the gym (3 times / week) Bench Press - 3*12 Incline Press - 3*12 DMB Bench Press - 3*12 Tricep Press - 3*12 Shoulder Press - 2 *12 BB upright row - 2*12 Rear Delt - 2 *12 T bar row - 2*12 HMR Lat pull - 2*12 DMB Hammer curl - 3*12 DMB Bicep Curls - 3*12 SB Crunches - 2*20 Side Crunch - 2*20 QUESTION 1: Is it a good idea to use my gym schedule(compounding) or Schteevie bulking guide(target specific muscles)? QUESTION 2: Will it easier if i gain first and then lose stomach fat or the other way round? Thanks. Vik..

Well your at a bit of a crossroads, There will be several differeing opinions brought here I am sure, but there are 3 things that you can do... either way, I appload you for realizing that it is the diet that will fix your problem. #1 cut now, and lower your suggested cal intake by 10-20%... and slowely lose weight till the gut goes away... but with that because you have a lower muscle mass, you need less calories per day, meaning 10-20% of your current calories wont be alot and it may go slightly slower, and be less forgiving of caloretic overages....which is the way that I went, but I rang around 180lbs of lean muscle so I had some bulk to begin with... or #2 bulk now get as much lean muscle as you can over the next 6 months, then go into a cutting phase of the diet, which now since you have 10+ pounds of lean muscle means you have an additional 500 calories to play with, making your metobolic rate a bit faster.... #3 Dan also says that it is very possible to both cut and bulk at the same time, for me this concept was hard and I didnt fare well and got a bit discouraged because immediate results were not quite as visible as quick... if you want to see slightly faster noticiable results I would cut first, but know either way you choose each will take time and dedication.

I'd just caution.... it's great that you want to pack on muscle, as that is the best way to get rid of that belly, but don't think you need to start drinking protein shakes and such. I just don't want you to get discouraged if you start going to the gym and end up gaining weight and looking a little chubby. You definitely are on the right track, though, and have the right idea. I have been reccommending to people who want to lose some fat to start lifting weights, and then running right afterwards. If your regimen takes like 40 minutes, run for no more than 20 minutes. You will have burned up all the "carb" energy, or glycogen, in your muscles by weight training, so your body will have to burn fat for fuel. As far as nutrition goes, keep reading on here as there are a ton of articles. Watch out for simple carbs - they spike your blood sugar, which in turn spikes your insulin, which aims to lower your blood sugar back down to earth. To do this, it turns that sugar into fat. However, take in plenty of carbohydrates from vegetables - you NEED it to fuel your workouts, and for recovery right afterwards. You need to replace the glycogen you burned in your muscles by eating carbs. Just monitor how much, often, and what you're eating, and lift weights and you can't go wrong. Also, someone on here said that eating every few hours also helps to prevent your body from storing calories as fat, because it is being constently fueled.
