Shoulder Pain!
-

My left shoulder has been giving me problems for the past two weeks. It only really bothers me during military press but its pretty painful. What other excercises can I do that will target the same muscles without hurting myself bc I am well aware that if I am in pain I need to stop doing excercises that agravate my shoulder. Any ideas what I might have hurt or how I can get around it in the gym would be extremely helpful!!

what you have is either shoulder impingement syndrome or a rotator cuff strain. I am more likely to say S.I.S. as it hurts during overhead press movements, this is because the subacromial bursa sac (shock absorber right below the end of the clavicle/collarbone) becomes inflamed and the actual clavicle pushes into it make it worse during overhead presses. I would do NOTHING overhead in terms of presses, any heavy pressing at all (bench, incline bench), and any back exercises you do must use a neutral grip (think as if you were holding a beer straight up and down). You dont want any vertical or horizontal abduction or adduction of the shoulder, the neutral grip will keep it only extending or flexing. Be careful though listen to your body. In terms of strengthening the shoulder i would do a lot of rotator cuff stretches as well as exercises that use shoulder rotation (think arm wrestling movement but with your elbow by your side) both towards and away from the body. Rest and ice are also a very good idea as it will help with the swelling in the bursa sac

So I havnt been doing any incline bench or overhead press and my shoulder is feeling much better. Its been about two weeks now but it still gets a sharp pain when i put it above my head. its much better but im dying to do some overhead lifts again and Im just not sure its going to go away. I mean 2 weeks should be enough time for something like this right?

2 Weeks isnt near enough time. Think about this, every time you work out you are using your shoulder. Chest, back, shoulders, arms, nearly everything involves use of your shoulder. If you tear your tricep you arent going to be doing bench presses if you are trying to get it better. When I hurt my rotator cuff i took about 2 months off and it still wasnt completely healed. Take at least some time off where you do no exercises involving your shoulder. This is a great time to focus on your legs and maybe some areobic endourance. After that I would do rotator cuff exercises one day a week like on an arms day and at least 48 hours between doing any chest/back/shoulder exercises. And go light on the weight for a few weeks. You might think you will just work through the pain but if it gets worse and you tear your rotator cuff you are going to have to take a lot more than a few weeks off.
