That's a really general question. I take a gainer. No big deal it's just a protein shake packed with carbs. Make sure you're getting enough cals overall or the gainer won't matter.

Just remember when you do take a gainer, make sure you have enough time and dedication when working out.  I know someone who took a gainer shake for 2 months and he slacked off on training.  Most of the weight that he gain turned into fat.  Not a good sight.

Take care

I choose to make my own rather than buying gainer powder.  Most, not all, but most are loaded with sugars.

My favorite one I drink twice a day is:

1 cup 1% milk
1 scoop vanilla protein powder (I like the Optimum Nutrition brand, 100% Gold Standard Whey)
1 banana
2 tbsp peanut butter
1 tbsp flaxseed oil, or Udo's Choice Blend
1 scoop GlycoMaize (from Optimum Nutrition)

This mix comes out to:

797 calories
34g fat
88g carbs
41g protein

The high fat content is actuall good fats from the flaxseed oil (essential fatty acids) and the peanut butter (monounsaturated fats).

Along with that, eat, eat, and eat some more.  But not crap like pizzas and ding-dongs.  Spend some time on this board in the nutrition section.  One pound of body weight is worth about 3500 calories, so you will need to eat an extra 500 calories a day to gain roughly 1 pound a week.  Not knowing your age and current activity/exercise level, you will most likely need to eat around 3000 clean calories a day to start gaining some pounds.  This is just a guess.

But again, be sure to take some time to read this forum.  There is a ton of info here!  I am 5' 10", 37 y/o, and started the year out at 130#.  I am at 150# exactly right now with little change in my body fat levels, and still gaining strong!

Good luck!

Question about this and other homemade weight gainers:

Are these going to be much more filling or harder to drink then a store bought gainer like cytogainer etc?

Not to me.  One thing about my mix it that there is less volume of liquid than when I mix most gainer powders.  I actually think it is easier to drink my mix than a powder mix.  At least the flavor is better, and I can kind of taylor the taste to my liking.  It doesn't sit too heavy in my gut either.

i agree with this.  it's actually not as thick as you would think it would be.

here's my recipe

1.5 cups skim milk
1 cup of oatmeal uncooked
1 spoonful of PB
1 scoop of rocky road procomplex protein

blend and enjoy. the oatmeal makes it juuuuuuuuust a bit grainy at times, but i don't mind.

has around 900 calories
80 or 90 g of carbs
around 55 g of protein
fat = low, don't remember the number off the top of my head

i have this in the morning as well as 3 eggs cooked in the microwave and some lowfat yogurt

I like the sound of both of those recipes for a weight gainer.  Can I just ask though...how much exactly is a 'cup' in terms of volume?  Being in the UK I'm afraid I'm used to either imperial or metric weights and measures.

Thanks

Dave
