Should I bother lifting when tired? - Saturday, May 01, 2004 2:43 PM
Hey all...

I love lifting, and I've been making great gains on the Max-OT program. However, I've been told that if I am really tired and haven't had a good night's sleep the night before, then I shouldn't even bother lifting. True? Or vicious lie?

BTW, I am at college, which, of course, means I am getting a max of 5-6 hours of sleep a night.

I wake up at 3am and go to sleep between 9and 10pm. During the day I work construction. I'm tired every day before my workout. I just take a shower to wash off the day and wake me up. I make gains all the time.

It must be a myth.

Of course it would be great if we could all get 10hrs of sleep a night and spend the rest of the day eating right and lifting weights, but unfortunately I haven't found someone to pay me for it yet.

Keep training!

I think every body responds differently....listen to yours....try it out for a 2-3wks...if you notice that your moods are erratic and your lifts aren't as consistent, feeling off or ill...you'll know then that you are overtraining...myself...if I'm overtired, I don't train...for me, I don't lift as well and I won't rest as well....sometimes innability to sleep is a sign of ovetraining, and since I'm in this for the long haul...I afford myself a day off here and there as my body dictates.

I've got really no idea!

How does somebody work all day at physcial labor and then workout? BigBossMan is one.. CPL is another.. a guy at the gym is another.. Gets up and is at work.. 6am.. but he gets up by 4am.. and goes to bed at 10pm. He has to be tired? I think if you don't have that kind of job and you are just tired one day.. (long night before) then maybe you can rest.

I've personally just stuck with the workout plan and when I get to working out, I feel refreshed. Some of my best workouts I've had are the times I felt it would be the worst.

The only bad thing about not having a good nights sleep is the rest needed for your body to grow at the optimal amounts. Otherwise, the next day, go for it.

It's that good ol thing I keep bringing up...LOL. the body's ability to adapt to the strangest things. I used to workout at night go to bed at 2AM and wake up at 6:30AM for work. As I started lifting heavier, it took it's toll, so now I lift earlier and go to bed earlier (or try to anyways..LOL). But if you are in a physical labor job, and you workout, your body is adapted to that job. Just like my job I am on my feet all day. I shouldn't have to do ANY cardio because I run, walk, jog, and stand all in a day's work for 8 - 10 hours a day. But yet I need to do cardio because my body has adapted to conditions to make it "easier" on itself.

yeah, i know what you mean. i just got a part-time job on a farm, and last weekend i was cleanig out a barn after the winter. damn, you'd be suprised how much pig **** and wet straw can weight...it made me really tired, so i took a day off. but like slayerboy said, your body can adapt. now i do all kinds of strenous work but am able to work out a couple hours later.
I bust mine to beat yours.
