Hi! I am 14 years old and 86 pounds. I workout these days. But should I be working out at this age? Isn't too early? I am 5'5. I am not impressed with this height. But should I be bodybuilding at this age though?

I wouldn't recommend going for any squat records or anything like that -handling obscene amounts of weight too frequently during your growing years could present some complications. But there's nothing wrong with moderate lifting. Any age is a good age to start taking care of yourself. Too many guys ruin their lives with steroids, trying to duplicate the hormonal boost they got during puberty. Don't waste this opportunity As for the rest of bodybuilding -namely, supplements- I would recommend holding off on that stuff until you're at least 17 or 18. Get the foundations of your nutrition program going now, stay active in some kind of athletic endeavor, and worry about tweaking your performance later, when your body has had time to fill out.

Yes, that's me in my avatar, and NO, I don't look like that today. That was taken back in Jan '07, and I lost most of that progress when I slacked off last year. I'm on my way back, tho, and I'm using that photo for inspiration.

Hell, I'd even wait until after 17 or 18 for the supps though- Still plenty of natural growth due to testosterone going on, might as well get as many gains from that alone before supplementing. But that's just me- Listen to Veggeep, solid advice.

There were some earlier posts on this too, you might try searching. But the message basically was, if you want to lift some serious iron, wait until puberty is hitting full swing (some guys are earlier, some are a lot later). Until then, bodyweight exercises are good, sports, and basically running around and have fun. You're young only once! Oh yeah, and start learning to eat right--you're NEVER too young (or old) for that, nor are you to young or old to learn how to get adequate rest.

But should I be bodybuilding at this age though? underweight_boy: I wouldn't suggest working out serious with weights right now. Although I prefer you practicin moderate light weights at about 3 sets of 10 reps is great. 3 days a week of weights is more than enough. I wouldn't do 4 days at your age. Since your tendons, ligaments, and bone structure are still maturing, I wouldn't lift heavy weights. you'll make good progress staying at light moderate weights. As much as possible, work with free weights instead of machines to help develop your balance and coordination. For those reasons, chins and rows are better than pulldowns and cable work. But like I said you should stay at light moderate weights. And have someone with good fitness and education background with you to watch your form and correct your mistakes and to guide you throughout the whole movement. At your age and testosterone level, the best thing you can do to improve your athletic ability and strength is to do athletics - to stay active. Doing sports drills, agility drills, running, getting invovled with physical education, helping your dad load heavy objects into the truck, moving furniture, etc. are the best things you can do - even better than weightlifting for now. Also, playing other sports like baseball, track and field, etc. will help develop your overall athletic ability. Hope this help!
