Serious Strength Training
Second Edition
Bompa, Di Pasquale, Cornacchia

A good buy for anyone, regardless of experience.  This book does a good job of explaining some of the science behind the sport, answering some of the why's we have all had at one time or another.  This book outlines the metabolic diet, discusses supplements, and has a great section on improving recovery time.  Many exercises are also detailed (lots of pictures) as well as which are most effective.  Probably the best part of this book is the explanation of periodization and it's detail into the different training phases, going well beyond just bulking and cutting.  I kind of stumbled upon this book at my local book store and said "What the heck" as it only cost 20 bucks.  Well worth your time and money at just under 300 pages.
I rate this at four stars.

I didn't get a single result from reading the book.  However the knowledge I gained and through sweat and determination I went from 220 lbs mid 20's body fat to 220 lbs and mid teens bodyfat.  I can put together an effective long term workout plan for myself based on my short and long term goals.  I can train safely and avoid overtraining and injury.  I can also diversify the exercises in my workout so that I can work all of my muscle groups effectively without repeating the same work out twice in the same month.  Did I mention it only cost twenty bucks?  Check out your local library, some libraries have it and you can decide if it is worth buying.

i totally agree with gluestick, this book is a great way to learn the science behind training, but that said is still easiest for the laymen to grasp. I also would recommend bompa's others books on training, especially periodzation;theory and methodology of training. this are a great resource on how to organise your training into manageable realistic training units. A must for any serious trainer.
