Running cross country barefoot? - Monday, July 13, 2009 11:47 AM ( #1 )
My current shoes are literally falling apart but I'm probably not picking up a new pair any time soon. Since I often go barefoot on some of the harshest surfaces in Texas, I was considering adding a short barefoot jog after my longer runs and working up to a few miles. Once I build up, I might change over to having one of my long runs as barefoot. I already strength train without shoes.

Does anyone have any advice or experience in running cross country barefoot? Recommendations?

Hm, slice your foot wide open and not be able to run for a couple weeks or get some new running shoes. Seems about as good an idea as doing bench press on a bed of nails.

I can imagine it'd be hard on your feet touching the pavement. And if it's hot the day it would burn.

Guys, he might want new shoes, but not everyone can go out and spend $80-120 on a new pair of shoes whenever they like..

He could go to walmart and spend 10-15$ on shoes. Good will spend 5.

There are plenty of alternatives. He could even do alternative exercise for cardio. Instead of jogging he could do burpees, or shadow boxing with HIIT.

If not, get some shoes.

If you can't afford shoes, just do everything without shoes. Your feet will get tough enough. But, I would go buy some cheap shoes at the wal mart or target.

dont you think running bare foot would be detrimental for some one with high arches.  Theres no way a person can run bare foot here in texas, unless your running on grass.

Tape will hold my shoes together as long as this heat and dryness keeps up. I just asked around and walmart does have $20USD shoes, I haven't been there in years, I figured they were $50USD or more, if you add in the gas money. I'll get some shoes when I get the fridge restocked.
I only looked up barefoot running due to the fact that I don't intend to slow down if my shoes crap out on me. Two days off, or more, and I feel like I got set back a week and it takes a few days to catch up. Cuts on hands or feet, alcohol, paper towels, and tape, fix them all, good to go as soon as the banage is on.

do NOT buy cheap shoes at cheap retails like walmart or target. I bough a 25 dollar pair of cheap running shoes from kmart and after one 40 minute run, both ankles were swollen. With each step, the shoes made a loud, metallic slapping sound, as they had the flexibility of cardboard, were heavy as hell, and just overall crap quality. So i refunded my money, and wet to sports authority where I paid 60 bucks for an awesome pair of adidas out of the 73 dollars in my checking at the moment. THAT-is dedication, lol.

I agree with whoever said doing alternative cardio.  If you can't possibly get another pair of good quality shoes, buy a jump rope instead.

I buy the $20 walmart shoes all the time.  They last me a year of walking.  I wouldn't buy running shoes there however.  Do you have a Reebok outlet or a Famous Footwear near you.  They have good prices.  Usually you can get a 2nd pair of shoes 1/2 off so if you also need a pair of walking shoes or any other kind of shoe, it's a pretty sweet deal.  Online is another option although if the shoes you receive don't fit, that could be a hassle.
