Running and added resistance
-
Thursday, August 14, 2008 4:16 PM
Hey everyone I need to start to do some running with added resistance. I first though of weight vest but then I though about tieing a chain to me and a wheel or something.. maybe making a kart where i could stack weight plates on it.. anyone ever did/heard of / seen to add resistance to running big med-big distances? BTW will running affect my weight gains? should I eat more than I actually do to make up for it?

Yes you should eat more. A sled for long distances probably not. A vest would be better. Sleds are for sprints simply because where are you going to run around with a sled behind you? haha

Why would that be a joke? Every stride you take, you are lifting your legs, not your torso. They will fatigue you faster. You could also wear both for a real test.

i'm not a fan of running with ankle weights on... puts way too much stress on the ankles. i'd go with the vest. if you are extending a lot of energy, your body needs to get it from somewhere, if you give yourself the nutrtition that it needs so that it can run off of what you are putting in, you won't be tapping into muscle stores. a good way to ensure this is to make sure to eat a lot of protein to keep building muscle mass. running consumes a lot of energy... so if you are trying to bulk up and increase your running distances at the same time, your body would use more energy for cardio and recovery, vs. building muscle. running uses different muscle fibers than lifting weights. your muscles will still grow, just not as dramatically. you'll wind up with tight compact muscles designed for endurance more than strength.

I started giving out calls to find out where I could find a weight vest and I found none so far but some guy just told me to be carefull with those cause apparently it could kinda disform ( sp ) your spine... true ? are they really dangerous?

i've tried both. the vest and ankle weights...even the weighted backpack AND ankle weights at the same time! currently, i don't use either. something you might want to try... parachute running training... it's just air resistance... you can get one for like $50 i think and they REALLY work... it's good for everything...speed, stamina, etc.

If you have previous knee injuries, or bad knees DO NOT run with added resistance That parachute sounds awesome, no strain to the knees or ankles plus if it's very windy you can fly. win-win situation
Squat max - 245lbs Bench max - 188lbs Deadlift max - ¿? Front Squats(atg)- 5x165lbs
