Routine not ROUTINE - Friday, September 11, 2009 7:44 AM ( #1 )
I just wanted to post this because I am a bit curious.  I know there are plenty of posts about everyone's actual exercise routine, but I was wondering what types of things you all do to get ready to workout, what is your daily routine in preparation to workout?

Because I work two jobs I have to workout in the morning.  So, I usually start my day getting up at 4:30 am, roll out of bed and take my dog out.  When I come back in, I head straight to the coffee pot and pour me a large cup (two really) of coffee from my pot which is set to start brewing at 4:15 am.  I also take a multivitamin and a BCAA pill before drinking the coffee.  I usually don't eat anything before working out unless I am just too hungry.  Then, I will sit around for 45 mins to an hour and watch something on my DVR while I get my body woke up and get mentally ready to exercise.  Then, I will go down and do about 15 min of cardio and 45 min of weights and take my post workout stuff and eat.

I do this 4-5 days a week except for the one week I take off every 8-12 weeks.

Get home from work, relax for about an hour at my pc, get my BCAAs and postworkout nutrition ready, usually have some oatmeal or rice, sometimes pop an energy pill, then drive to the weightroom.

Eat, and go lift.  Ignore any bit of tiredness or anything else that would keep you from getting to the gym.

at the moment i am rowing/cycling three or four  times a week on my lunch break adn lifting two nights on a weekend and on a saturday morning. i also play football or soccer whtever you want to call it on a wednesday night.
whichever im doing, i eat two hours before. my work allows me to be fliexble around meals, so i can generally eat when i want. i drink maybe a gallon of water a day except for saturdays when i probably drink a gallon of beer instead.

I was wondering if most people do eat prior to working out, it seems like most of you guys do.  I dunno, I just drink coffee and get in the mental mindset beforehand then get at it.  I did try eating my breakfast before lifting for a while but it didn't seem to make a difference in my lifts.  Generally, I don't feel physically tired when I lift that early in the morning, it just takes a bit to get the sleepiness out of my system.

It's not about eating for energy (well, of course energy is nice to have too), but it's about providing your muscles with the nutrients they need to grow.  Search around on google for the importance of both pre and post workout nutrtion.

  • Breakfast: Important for avoiding catabolism. Also important for energy.
  • Mid-breakfast: Keeping your body anabolic, keeping glycogen up so the anaerobic glycosis can provide muscle with the needed energy.
  • Pre-workout: Important for hormonal production by the endocrine system, important for energy.
  • Post-workout: Keeping hormones optimal. Avoiding being catabolic.
  • Before bed: You're going 8 hours without protein, you definitely need some slow releasing proteins to avoid catabolism throughout the night.
Every meal is essential. You need to be eating like a Siberian tiger and training like a competitive athlete.

I'm religious about pre and post nutrition.

45 minutes pre - I eat a sandwich or some other light meal with a good blend of protein/carbs.

30 minutes pre - I drink a serving of superpump with half a bottle of gatorade.

During - I drink the other half bottle of gatorade, not the light/low cal kind.

Immediately post - I drink 24g ON 100% whey.

30 minutes post - I have a sandwich/tuna/chicken and a serving of fruit.

do you not get cramps eating that soon before a work out? whenever i do that i feel bloated and lethargic, almost as if my digestive system wants all the blood and my muscles are not allowed any.

Maybe I should change my pre-exercise routine and eat at least a little something beforehand.  Like I said, I usually get up, drink about two cups of coffee while waking up for an hour or 45 min and then go lift.  I always drink water during the workout.  And, I always drink protien w/ glutamine and creatine afterward, then take a shower, then I make a breakfast, usually three eggs.  So, I get in some food after, just never before.  I suppose I could get some lunch meat and make a morning sandwich or something like that to munch the 45 min or hour before I actually workout.

I have stomach issues already so I've been experimenting with it for a while. I only eat about 300cals so it doesn't weigh me down. My problem is if I don't eat enough pre-workout I'll yack during.
