Routine for my wife - Friday, June 23, 2006 9:43 AM ( #1 )
Hello gals,

I've been trying to get my wife to pick up some iron here and there at the gym, but haven't had much luck getting her off of the low intensity cardio machines.  It doesn't help that the free weight room in our gym is dominated by men (and a lot of muscle heads), to the point where she won't even step foot in the room to spot me!

I like Nicole's "Top" article on myths and misconceptions, because it really speaks to how my wife looks at weight training.  She believes she will bulk up.  Further, if she ever does touch a weight, she goes 5 lbs for 100 reps.  I'm having a hard time convincing her that weight training will enhance her metabolism, and do much more good for her in the long run.  I think she believes my knowledge is based on male weight lifting, and it doesn't translate to females.

Do you all have any suggestions for convincing her to at least give weights a try?

I thought as a break in, she could do pull downs (to get her back and bis), and push ups (for her shoulders, tris, and chest), and something for her legs.  I'm guessing squats are too scary--maybe she could use those leg machines all of the guys are scared of?  A swiss ball should be good for hitting her stomach and lower back, but it would be great if she threw in some good mornings (she has a weak lower back that causes her problems).

What do you all think?

In the end, I guess we should all do what we like, and something is better than nothing.  I just think she would enjoy weights more.

Thank you!

good mornings could cause injury. go for stiff leg deadlifts instead, it also really hits the hamstrings.

WOMEN DO NOT GET HUGE LIFTING HEAVY WEIGHT. WOMEN GET HUGE TAKING STEROIDS. OUR BODIES JUST CAN'T PUT ON THAT KIND OF SIZE W/O MAJOR HELP AND YEARS IN THE GYM.

so go lift some weight.

I couldn't agree more!  I was thinking of straight leg deadlifts, too.

Is that your routine in your signature?  If not, what is your current routine?

Your idea is good, start her slow, get her to try a few things and she will like it and see the nice changes of tone and see its not easy to get big and before you know it, she will be hitting weights.
Try the ball ab exercises and 1-2 simple DB exercises with light weight so she is not turned off, like front delt raise and lunges, the lunges tone thighs so tell her they help them look leaner......keep her at bw for now then weights later, bw lunges are great.
The shoulders will help shape her arm a tad but not scary so she will like that.
I welcome her to email me if she likes, just don't show her my contest stuff, I have pics of me that are much softer and real, the contest stuff is unreal and will scare her maybe but there are other pics of me on the net where I am much more natural and soft looking, the attainable look.   Get her to sign up for free bodytalk magazine, I write for them and they have my pics in there with some great workouts she can try http://www.eclipsecec.com/ click on Body Talk Mag and sign up for free copies.
