Routine for my girlfriend - Wednesday, August 24, 2005 11:49 PM ( #1 )
I was wondering if you ladies could help me out. I am looking at routines for my girlfriend that focus on shaping up her lower half more, and a little on the top.

I have read heaps of things and it is very confusing what reps and sets should be adheard to for "toning up".

I have her doing 3sets of 15,15,12.
Doing 2 leg sessions a week and one upper body.
She also does cardio 3-4 times a week.
She is very fit just doesn't look the way she should for the effort and fitness that she has and makes.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Andrew

Some articles to get your GF started...(the first article includes a workout plan at the end)

"Lean, Sexy and Hard, Part 1. Weight Training for Women by Joel Marion"

So when training for strength, a man should use between 1 and 5 reps while a woman will benefit more from doing 3-6 reps. Also, most women will need to perform 1-2 more sets of an exercise to achieve the same degree of stimulation as a man, once again because of their lower motor unit activation." The weight training routine that we will outline next month is modeled around these recommendations.

Here's another great article :

Fun With Women!
My new pastime (and how women should train)

Basically, women should train almost exactly like men, with a few minor differences:

1. Slightly more reps per set: Women do not have the capacity to recruit as many motor units as men do. As such, they'll need 1-2 more reps to fully stimulate their muscles. So when training for strength, a man should use between 1 and 5 reps while a woman will benefit more from doing 3-6 reps. When training for muscle gains, men will benefit from doing 5-10 reps while women should stick to 7-12 reps.
2. Slightly more sets per exercise: The reason is the same as above. Most women will need to perform 1-2 more sets of an exercise to achieve the same degree of stimulation as a man, once again because of their lower motor unit activation.
3. Slightly less intensity: This is not to say that women aren't as strong as men. But since they need a few more reps and a few more sets, the relative intensity must be decreased a little to allow for proper progression.

dnyc99 thanks for those, they are quite helpful.
So I am not far off the mark with the 3 sets of 15,12,12 and using compound movements like squats etc.
I suppose from that reading I could sugguest that she includ a 4th set to things. And make it more a 12,12,12,12.

I have to say that it is very hard to find quality info on womens weight training, which is strange considering the amount of women in the gym doing weights. So thanks again dnyc99.
