Hey everyone. So like many "newbies" I'm looking to gain some mass to my little body (5'10" - about 145 pounds) I've read a lot into working out, gaining mass, and diet and all that fun stuff and I've decided to try the Mark Rippetoe's Starting Strength routine. However, I've come across a little problem - Squats. The gym at my apartment complex does not have a squat rack, which is a complete bummer. We do have a smith machine, but I understand that it is not the same as using a free weight. So I guess I'm asking a couple questions: Is there anyway I can do squats without the rack? - I tried to do hack squats last week, but it felt really uncomfortable and kind of awkward. Should I just suck it up and learn them if I dont have a rack? If not, would it even be worth doing the Starting Strength routine if I am using a Smith machine for the squats? Thanks, any input would be appreciated.

Do the Smith machine. It will still be beneficial, even without the use of your stabilizer muscles. But if you ever get the chance for freeweights, jump on it.
