Review From Past Experiance of The Atkins Diet - Saturday, January 10, 2004 1:24 AM ( #1 )
The Atkins diet is a pretty good LIFESTYLE (just like anything else should be) to have if your read the book cover to cover, maybe even do a little extra research. I believe Marc said at one point:

applied knowledge is power

So the more you know without taking in to much and get confused, the better off you will be. The first phase of the Atkins diet is called the, "Induction Phase." In this phase you will eat like a person wanting a heart attack the next day. Note that many people read in the book and it actually does say you can as much of some things as you want to... But in the book it also recomends you watch the calories.
You are only suppose to consume 20 grams or less of (digestible ) carbohydrates and absolutely no sugar. WHY?! Well so that you near deplete your body of blood sugars and stored glycogen. This will force your body into Ketosis, wich basically means you're burning fat. You can monitor this by using urine test strips that read the amount of ketones are being released when fat molecules are broken down. The maximum recomended time you stay in this first phase is two weeks, it's kind of like a self esteem boost showing you can burn body fat (WOOHOO). You can stay in this phase longer if you like if you have a little more cushion for the pushin. When you move on through the different stages you will be allowed to eat things like nuts an fruits(those are food items that contain enzymes in their raw state to help you burn fat, ironic eh?). Oh yeah by the way, you still need to excersize, there will never be a quick way out, if you think there is, I recomend you do not find a diet but seek psyciatric help because that kind of thinking is weird. You don't get a good body eating cheese puffs and watching re-runs (!)...

The book will also contain a few basic lists of food and little help guides to figure what your carb intake is desireable for your body mechanics, and what foods you can chow on, and things to be wary of.

This book, lifestyle, diet or whatever your little heart desires to call it, is generally an all around ok book, it has good intentions for the reader(it will also give you a reminder to set attainable goals, so you will be happy to presue). What my conclusion of this would be is... This book is for older porky people that want to get back into a little bit of a normal physique and live a little more comfortable. Older people who honest god can't workout (except for maybe simple aerobics, like walking, gardening, cleaning etc.)! Dr. Atkins even says it himself in the book!! "I noticed myself getting kind of older and porky, thought I should do something about my ever growing rump." Some things are ok for some people.

I was on this lifestyle/diet and I realised I am not a 55 year old porker who doesn't care to be muscular, or maintain low body fat to lean body mass ratio. I am an athelete who needs weight and endurance training. I hope this has helped some people to choose a direction of where they want to go with their lifestyle.

And for any newcomers, "Welcom to DiscussBodybuilding.com" And sorry if it is poorly written... I'm kind of sleepy.

My biggest problem with Atkins is that I always thought you needed carbs to keep your body from burning protein instead of fat. WHY would you cut your carbs so low? If you just want to loose wegiht and don't care about muscle, fine. But I could never do that. I guess it's like you said, it depends on whether you just want to loose weight or want to keep muscle and be in shape to be an athelete.
