Replacing protein powders with food
-
Sunday, February 15, 2009 7:16 PM
( #1 )
Right now I'm taking 3 whey servings a day - 1 in my breakfast oatmeal, 1 before my workout, and 1 in a fruit smoothie after my workout. I also take a casein shake at night. All of that adds up to about 100 out of 225 grams of my daily protein intake (roughly). Should I try to replace any of my shakes with real protein, like a piece of chicken or a can of tuna? I know that whole foods are better than powders, but I know that it's important to get protein into your system quickly in the morning and after a workout, which is why I do the powders then. But what about pre-workout? I guess my other question is how quickly do real proteins process as compared to powders. And also, I don't think I can replace my casein shake with cottage cheese (mmm, cottage cheese) because of carbs.

I would not use a preworkout protein supplement or food at all. And don't worry about the carbs in the cottage cheese....it is a negligable amount.

right, but I guess that I'm asking "what kind of protein is in other things" like chicken, fish, beef, etc... Is that whey-ish or does it digest differently?

From my knowledge, protein in real food is definitely not whey-ish. They are digested differently. Unless in the morning and post-workout, I don't see why you can't replace your protein intake. The only reason you would want to stay with having 3 shakes a day is that protein powder is very cheap and easy to get.

So according to the article, meats fall somewhere in between whey and casein, but closer to whey. I guess I could replace my pre-workout with real food then.

Whey= fast digesting protein Chicken=A little slower. About the same really. At bed time the chiken is better but post workout whey is. Its a timing thing. For post workout kepp the whey and I dunno why you NEED it in the morning. Just get a real meal with eggs or something that will be better.

whey is just easier protein for the body to digest since its already partially digested in a sense for at night i use egg whites and just drink that ****.

I don't think, that natural food is a lot better. Protein powders are great... but maybe just use them in morning, and after workout :) In the evening you should have time to make some chicken or smthn. :)
