Replacement for different squats
-
Wednesday, July 02, 2008 2:56 PM
Not what you think, I would never get rid of squats :) Ok I'm doing NROL fat loss 2 and my gym has no squatting rack, they have a squating machine which is kind of hard having good form doing a front squat. Can I do a front squat with dumbells(if yes how should I hold them). Is there a good replacement for a front squat? Thanks

You have to clean them up but yea you can squat with dumbells. The cleaning really limits how much you can get up. You could also just hang dumbells to squat.

Yikes, I hate it when gyms don't have squat racks. What the hell is gonna happen next with gyms, no weights? Just machines??? Try to join a new gym, but in the meantime just do the dumbell squats.

if thats your only option then i guess your stuck but that will really limit how much you can do. i know for lunges if i wanted to do 12 reps i couldnt hold on to much more than 60lb (pretty weak grip) but i can do way more than 120 for squats

Thanks for all of the advice :. One last quick question. Does it matter if i do lounges with a barbell or dumbells? Besides the whole grip issue, the only place I see it really mattering is in the ab core area. But does it really make that much of a difference?

ORIGINAL: mriggy Thanks for all of the advice :. One last quick question. Does it matter if i do lounges with a barbell or dumbells? Besides the whole grip issue, the only place I see it really mattering is in the ab core area. But does it really make that much of a difference? Ive done lunges with barbells and dumbbells. The only difference ive seen is that I can't do heavy/ low rep lunges with dumbbells because I would need to hold on to 90lb dumbbells in each hand. Most people do higher reps for lunges though, and in that case it wouldn't matter imo.

Careful while cleaning the weights up, my powerlifting gym has home made dumbells with PBC pipe handles, so I find its best to use gloves to avoid a really painful skin pinch/chunk of it come off. Also, the bigger the dumbells the harder it is to rack them for a squat. I find that 80's does enough to stimulate my body, not just the legs if you do close together and deep, but your core and arms as well. (I rack them on my shoulders for support, and squat).
