Really Skinny Arms.... - Thursday, May 28, 2009 8:08 AM ( #1 )
Hi,
Well my delemia is that my arms are really skinny.  I think its due to my small wrists/bone size stacked with the extra long length.
I measured my wrists and they are about 6.75 inches
My forearms are around 12 cold unflexed at the largest part
my bi's are 13 or so cold and 15 flexed.

I am just really starting to get into weight training, so i need some work.
But right now i am pretty happy with the way i look except for the fact my arms look so skinny in short sleeves.

It seems the biggest part of my forearm muscle stops halfway down my arm, so untill it hits the forearm muscle it is just a little bigger then my wrist size.  This is the same for my calf muscle.    Very skinny ankels big calf muscle that stops half way down my leg.   Is there anything i can do to help this?  I really hate the way it looks.

If you have 15" arms flexed, that's not bad.

It just sounds like you need to put on some mass, do so with a high protein, high complex carbohydrate, low fat diet.

Hey MVP,

First off thanks for offering advice.

If i wear a sleeve-less shirt i look much more propotioned.  but its my long thin forearm (up till half way to 3/4) of my arm that makes my arms look so skinny.   Is there anything i can do for these.  I have just been trying to increase then naturally with the rest of my body, and my muscle belly has increased the skinny part is really increasing in size.

Shirts tend to that to people. Certain apparel can make the appearance of someone's muscle density more or less visible, there's not much you can do about it.

Just wear the type of shirts that brings out your muscular appearance better and continue to work on adding mass. Me for instance, when I have a sleeveless or just a regular t-shirt on I look huge; my shoulders and chest look very stout.. but I put a hollister or American Eagle polo shirt on and I look like I'm on the brink of starvation, plus my stomach becomes more visible. So I just wear t-shirts and muscle shirts..

It's a rule of thumb (although no always accurate) that you gain 1 inch to your arms every 15 pounds of muscle that you put on.. so try to eat like an animal and train like beast, the results will come as you progress in weight, stamina, endurance and nutrition.

How old are you my friend? Because last time I checked those are not skinny arms.. unless you are really tall or really short and fat and have very long biceps? Either way .. You don't have "really" skinny arms, you might not have huge arms but I would classify them as medium or small perhaps?

I know my arms are around 14.2-5 when hot and flexed and I don't have big arms.. but I wouldn't say they are really skinny arms.

If you want to gain bigger arms then gain a bigger base first. You think you can eat the same while only working your arms and Actually gain big arms? Not a chance playboy, you need to eat lots of calories, intake enough protein (lb body weight) and go heavy enough on curls to just hit 3 sets of 6. Then do tricep work (which is 65% of upper arm) and go heavy on them to. Then do some fore arm work (not too much) but definitively make sure you feel the burn.

Good luck there mate!

since this topic is ON, i guess i will just post my query here..

> If I incorporate isolations for arms and calves in the texas method, will I be screwing my training? I mean, if I follow the same pattern with barbell curls, BB Over head tricep press, calf rises and BB reverse curls.

Coz my pecs, delts, legs and back seem to respond greatly in size and strength. Forearms were roasted in the first 2 times I did a max intensity fullbody day, but now they are equally strong to handle the heavies and so are the bis, calves and tris. but they dont put on size as fast as they put on strength.

I have cleaned my diet further and also am keeping a calorie count. So I make sure I'm covered with respect to nutrition.

I realise that texas is designed with keeling compound movements in mind, but was wondering whether I can use the same pattern of 3 days with variations in volume and intensity for Isolations after I'm done with the compounds in 45 mins.
If it works with compounds, it should work with isolations too right?

Also I have the other idea to get into a 3 day high volume, full-body, programme. maybe more reps could bump up the growth in these smaller muscles..

dude, I am not worried about over-training or CNS fatigue or any of that crap coz im very FAR away from that stage.

but if you chk out starting strength notes or any other outine notes, u get a to see a lot of stuff that goes like , "dont even try to be a retard and change a single exercise in the program... blah blah blah". so thats why im concerned about putting in isolations into a program designed with keeping the compound lifts in mind.

Well you specifically said 'is this overtraining?' lol

But anyway, I've just picked up starting strength as I'm moving from splits to full body and I know it says don't change routine, but adding in isolations around it seriously won't hurt. I've added 2x8 bi, 2x8 tri and 2x8 chins on one day - and 2x8 dips, 2x8 calf raises and 2x8 shoulder iso on the other day, and i'll also be doing some ab work on each session. Adding in a couple like that will be fine.
