At his age.. young.. I'd say master the heavy basics. Forget the "big" weight and work on form. What he learns now will carry on. As with any sport, it's better to start off fresh, knowing nothing and get it right or else you'll spend your 20's and 30's unlearning all the bad habits you picked up. At 14.. he's growing. Meaning work on that eating. Do the basics. Start off with simple weight and work up. That way when he deadlifts 275 for reps, he'll be doing it correct and not using his "age" to get the weight up any way possible. Because at 41, that's probably not such a good idea. So what kind of goals? As Kris once told me. Smaller goals are easier to accomplish. Set monthly goals rather then yearly. I can't give specifics about diet and training but I would work on the 80% of nutrition that most people don't get and read The Basics by Twin Peak and just start off at 14 with a very mature set of training rules and discipline. No going in and messing around. Treating the weights like a jungle gym. And no going in trying to the the heaviest set of your life never doing that exercise before.
