Protein before you work out - Monday, April 05, 2004 6:58 PM
Anyone read the new Men's Health? In it they say there was a study at Baylor U. Mind you it was not a large study but this is what they said. They took 36 guys with at least 6 weeks training experience. Gave them whey-casein mixture before workouts. Over 10 weeks they build 50% more lean muscle mass than the group of guys that took whey only. The reason was that casein slows down catabolism. They used a brand name which I won't bother posting but then they go on to say just take 40 grams of whey with a glass of milk before your workout. Now I have always taken my whey after my workout. Any thoughts????

I take it before my workout and after. Before my workout I will use 30 grms just to give the muscles something to go one once the breakdown starts, and then I will take 40 grams when I go to bed. But after you work out you have a 2 hour period the feed the muscles, or so I hear. So that is when I usually eat a dinner that will incude some animal protein.

If I were you, I continue to make sure you get some whey immediately following a workout because its the fastest digesting protein and you want to feed your muscles immediately after a training session. I think casein is a good idea to take before bed because it will digest long term overnight avoiding catabolism. Otherwise you should be fueling yourself every 2-3 hours of the day with some kind of either whey/egg/lean meat protein. That's my take.
