Protein Shakes causing dizzyness - Tuesday, January 13, 2004 2:13 PM
Hi,

I am new to your world and my main goal is to gain lean weight.
I find this forum to be a great source of advice from poeple who are actually "doing it".

Im pretty lean - 6"1, 160 lbs.

My sugestion is this:

I have been taking a Weight-Gainer shake (75% carbs / 25% Protein - I think) and EVERY time I drink one, I get slightly dizzy and feel sick for about 10 mins. Is this normal??

I know these are indeed "supplements" I have worked on a suitable diet for putting on weight.

Can anyone advise if Protein Bars would be better for me than shakes?

Cheers

No. I've had issues with brands of protein. I felt sick after.. nauseous. The protein in that brand did not agree with me. Once I found another brand or went back to my favorite, I was fine. It's most likely something in that brand does not agree with you. Feeling sick is not cool. And it's not normal. Find another brand and see if it's the same. Not all brands and not all proteins are the same.

Just different. Sometimes shakes are lower in carbs and sugars. Bars tend to have more sugar as it needs to taste good. But really, I don't see a huge different. But I don't hear about people getting the protein bar on after a workout like they do a drink. Because a shake will be absorbed into your body faster as there's less to break down.

I think of a bar as a good meal replacement or a snack in between long breaks. I see a shake as a method for getting that extra protein quickly. Especially post workout.

Cheers for that.

When I was in the fitness sroe the guy was pushing Creatine, which I know little about.

Is this something that I should be adding too?

No, it's not normal, my guess is that you are sensitive to phenylalanine, many people are, try getting a protein supp with less PA and you'll be fine... just a guess though... LMK...
