Protein intake
-

I know the body can only handle so much Protein at once. I believe its 60g. Anything more is wasted. But, How long does it take until you can have more? One hour of 60g than wait another hour to do 60g more? I'm trying to get my intake over 350g daily, but hate to waste it by overdoing it. Any ideads?

That post says nothing of time. Altho it did mention absorption time being faster for a drink. I need to know if I wait an hour is it ok to have another drink. I would like to eat one, drink two, eat one, drink two, eat one, drink two through my day.

I read somewhere (t-nation possibly) that your body absorbs 97% of the total protein you eat at each meal. I might have dreamed that up, but it does ring a bell.

Where has this rumor come from? I've never seen any worthwhile research that supports this idea. That's not to say that it doesn't exist, but it sure is elusive... edit: This is a response to the OP, just to be clear.

wouldn't the intake be greater after your workout? ...

Numbers vary on your muscle mass, but 30-40 grams after workouts and 20-30 at all other times. For amino saturation ingest every 2-3 hours.

Oh, youtube Ronnie Coleman: Relentless. In one of his post workout drinks he gets 120 grams of protein in just one shake. I wouldn't worry about wasting protein.

I've always had it in my head that the body can only absorb approx 30-40 grams of protien every 2.5-3 hours. Otherwise why wouldn't you simply just take 100 grams at once....from the thread it's apparent everyone is different but most of the diets you see, most folks are eating every 2-3 hours. Just my two cents.

Wetdawg don't concern youself too much with this. If you want 350 grams and you are eating 6 meals like you suggested. just spread them out. that is 60 grams a meal, but if you want to lower the amount per meal and increase frequency I am sure that would be fine as well if not better. I really need to nail my diet down. frequency has been awful lately.

For your body weight which I beleive in a previous discussion you said you cruised at 280 approx so you are correct at about 60g in a sitting. Because protein metabolism is very subjective you need to look at how your body behaves to figure out the best time to re-up as it were. You will know, like with vitamins if you are taking them in too fast for instance by the sight and smell of your piss. Protein obviously due to its make up of umpteen different residues there is no one metabolite to watch for so you watch for changes. In my seeing patient days which were VERY brief, not for me, I like test tubes, I can think of examples of brutally overweight men who would complain of this feeling of emptyness or hollowness almost like hunger pangs no matter how much they ate, when asked about their diet or the last meal they had it would be like "sausages" o.k. and.........."just sausages" night before "steak" and let me guess more steak.... and we are talking big servings. So I have always been under the belief that too much protein can cause a disturbance in your gut that is unpleasant and sour. I think you can get to 350g, I really do, but I think you may want to try going to bed an hour earlier and waking up for a half hour in the night for another 60, that way if you go with 60 at each meal plus your mid nighter you can snack on almonds or something slowly through the day to make up that 5th and 6th 60 gram serving. If you start to notice changes in your piss, its too fast. I'll get the merck manual out and my medical encyclo of the digestive system and see if there is an equation you can plug your numbers in . Remeber too if the body NEEDS it protein is one thing it will accept a lot more of. As a power lifter you probably really shred your fibres on an average workout, thats a good time to get an extra full serving in, none of that would be wasted.

Thanks for all the info guys. Waking up could be the solution to extra protein. If I work on timing every three hours I can get a couple of drinks in extra.

Yea.. you have to spread it out throughout the day. Have a meal/shake every 2-3 hours. Don't try to take in 60gs every other hour. You would waste your money, your body just can't handle all that protein in that short a period. I take in roughly 40-50g per meal and I have 4 real meals and 2 shakes. A 50g shake after lifting and a 25-30g casein shake before bed. Shouldn't be hard if you spread it out properly.

I still think 1.5 grams per lb is the perfect ratio rather then 1 gram per lb.

AdamScott I still think 1.5 grams per lb is the perfect ratio rather then 1 gram per lb. I was thinking 1.5 or 1.6 myself. Just hard to get it in at my size. Hence my question of time between drinks.
