hey guys, my friend does full body workouts and i keep telling him to focus on 1 or 2 muscle groups while in the gym..  do any of you know what the pros and cons are concerning working out your whole body.  I think he does one excersize per group plus cardio and he is in the gym for about 1 hr.. he's been bulking and i was wondering if the full body workout routine was for him... thanks in advance

A lot of people really like 3 day full body routines.  They feel the muscle recovers well enough.

Others feel it's too much and a muscle needs 4-7 days to fully recover.

I guess you might call it a personal preference and it depends on your goals.  If your friend is making excellent progress, then don't fix what isn't broken.  If he's not changed much in the last few months and is "bulking" then something is wrong.

I'm not a fan of 3 day full body workouts.  I simply am more old school and my legs are still sore from the leg workout I did on Saturday.  I can't think to do them again.  Plus I have found that I like using supersts and working pretty intense in the gym and I respond well to weekly stimulation.

Bulking + Excessive cardio is the way to stay the same for years.  You "think" you are bulking but all you are doing is eating a lot and then burning it right off.  5 years later you are the same weight.  That's a failed bulk.

If he's bulking he certainly can do cardio.  Some people back it off to 2-3 times a week, 20 minutes for the heart AND to keep a little leaner during a bulk.  Then when it's cutting season, they up the cardio.  Then back it off again.  A person who has a horrible time gaining weight can eliminate the cardio aspect entirely although over the years and reading various research, I'm not a fan of no cardio.  Limited yes and short duration but elimination it's my style.

The real reason split routines were designed was that as you advance, you tend to do more work, more sets and require more rest.  So doing the whole body just is a daunting task that can't be done quickly.  It's a bodybuilding thing.

A person who simply wants to be fit and in shape, probably has no need for such a split routine.  You can work your body in a 3 day fashion quite nicely without having to kill yourself in the gym and be so sore it requires a couple of days to recovery.

It's your goals and preferences that should determine the ideal workout program.

Again, if your friend is growing, making progress and with each passing year he's doing better, then it's working for him.  And if your friend doesn't want to be some mass monster and just be in shape, then a 3 day routine can be great.

I was reminded the other day that not everybody who goes to the gym wants to be big.  Some people actually go there to just be in shape!

What's your friend's goal?

hey Marc, thanks for the quick reply my friend really appreciates it... he is 6 feet tall and was 140 lbs and was tired of being "tall and lanky"  he has been on Serious Mass that has helped him gain weight. he is now at 163 and has a goal of 175..  he bascially wants his body to fit his frame, like you said "everybody that is in the gym is in there for a different reason"  he wants to stay fit but not look like a monster, lol i'm a little different. the more of a monster i look like the happier i am.. HAHA  but anyways, he does a 3 day a week full body workout and he says that he feels that his muscles are repairing well enough for him to w/o again the next day or 2.  like i said he has been making progress so he is happy with what he is doing... however i told him what you said about cardio and he hasn't been doing any.. so he said that he was going to start but keep it minimal since he still wants to gain weight... my friend was wondering if he should do some sort of a cycle with his weight gaining supp.. simply because he wants to see if his body will just metabolize all of his progress off.. he took one week off of serious mass and was pleased to note that he hadn't made a signifigant loss in weight.  so all in all, he wants to know how he should stop taking his supp so he won't just start losing that weight.  I told him that if he is converting that mass into muscle mass, then he will be just fine, am i correct or no?

my friend wants to thank you for your help, it really does mean alot to him.

ps my friend is having great results with serious mass by optimum nutrition, and told me to that he would recommend it for anyone on this site that is trying to gain weight.
