Problems increasing Bench/Max Intensity Advice - Friday, October 23, 2009 4:39 PM ( #1 )
I'm looking for some advice to help me increase my bench, as well as advice on proper lifting techniques for doing 1RM-Bench.

Currently, I'm using the Texas Method and decided to follow the example excel template(available on the stronglifts website) for training. It's laid out like so:

Day 1                                     Day 2                                 Day 3
Squat 5x5                Squat(or front squat) 3x3               Squat 1x1(or1x2or1x3)
Bench 5x5                OH Press 3x3                                  Bench 1x1(or1x2or1x3)
Rows 5x5                 Row 3x3                                          DL 1x1
Weighted Dips 3x5
Chin Ups 3x5                                                                                                                               <======= Alternating between variations each week

Day 1                                     Day 2                                 Day 3
Squat 5x5                Squat(or front squat) 3x3               Squat 1x1(or1x2or1x3)
OH Press 5x5           Bench 3x3                                       OH Press 1x1(or1x2or1x3)
Rows 5x5                 Row 3x3                                          DL 1x1
Weighted Dips 3x5
Chin Ups 3x5

My DL's are moving along well at 255 1RM but my bench is significantly weaker. I can barely pull off 155 1RM and I'm thinking it has something to do with my warm up method.

What's the best warm up method-i.e. load/percentage of 1RM & reps- to do before attempting a new record 1RM?

Also, are there videos or articles available that describe the lifting technique for doing a 1RM with the Bench Press? I've seen videos of people using alot of power from their back and legs.

If anyone could give me some pointers I'd really appreciate it. Thanks

if your deadlift 1rm is @ 255 currently, I can understand your bench only being around 155.

In terms of strengths per lift it goes.

Deadlift > Squat > Bench > clean > Press

I think it just has to do with your overall strength, sounds like you need to start eating more. And give yourself time, your bench is not going to go up as fast as deadlifts or squats, thats just how it goes.

As far as technique and warm up goes. You want to make sure you warm up enough, but not too much. A lot of people do different warm up techniques for 1rm, try some and see what works best for you. Just dont waste your energy warming up to your 1rm.

You want to use your back and legs. Your legs are you extension to the floor, giving you power through them, up the hips and back to the bar. Arching allows you to also shorten the distance and generate more power through the legs. You want to be careful though and not rise your ass off the bench. A lot of guys get this confused with arching and they bring their entire backside off.

In short, check your diet perhaps you can start eating more. Maybe try GOMAD (gallon of milk a day) it works great. And give yourself some time, bench will never progress as fast as your bigger compounds.

Thanks Nm0ney,

I will have to look into the GOMAD thing. I'm definitely eating either under or around maintenance. I was under the impression that eating more was meant for adding muscle mass rather than strength. Is eating above maintenance required in order to help strength along? Or can it be done with a moderate, balanced amount of micro-nutrients? I'm also taking creatine which is funny because it's doing very little for strength compared to when I'm not taking it.

Another quick thing,

I noticed the texas method vs. Madcows 5x5 has less work involved it seems. Only one day of 5x5 vs. 2 days and then 4x5 on the third day with Madcows. I'm thinking I should maybe continue a bit further with starting strength until I definitely stall out completely on my lifts, and then switch to Madcows 5x5. Does the Madcow 5x5 generally increase strength quicker?

You can gain strength without a surplus, but I would figure out what exactly maintenance is and eat at that. The less you take in though the the more it can effect your strength. if your not looking to get into a surplus, I would definitely time your nutrition as best as possible, with pre/post nutrition as top priorities.

im assuming your talking about texas method and madcows intermediate? That version of madcow is for linear progression and does have more volume across the week, however with TM you are dealing with different layout, and one of the days is a low volume/high intensity or heavy day.

Madcows advanced program is more like the TM with some variations, They are both great programs and honestly you can alternate between them for quite some time.

I personally love madcows advanced 5x5, and while I have done both, I prefer that one to TM, though they both are great.
