Pro Bodybuilders...what do you think?
-
Friday, January 02, 2004 1:15 PM
For Christmas my parents got me the 25th anniversary of "Pumping Iron" For those of you who are unfamiliar with that video it is about the 1975 Mr. O when Lou Ferigno was Arnold's biggest competitor. In one of the special features on the DVD Arnold was talking about how people used to ask him if they took steroids and he said that they did. He openly admitted it, along with the rest of his bodybuilding cronies. However, Arnold said that now pro bodybuilders are subject to random testing before a competition. They are given two days advance (which is not enough time to flush streroids out of a system). I do not buy that at all!!! Does anyone in this forum think it is possible to become as big as Ronnie Coleman or Jay Cutler (Ronnie who is even bigger than Arnold ever was) without the use of the roids. What are your opinions on this.

I find it interesting that guys tend to want to be HUGE when they are teenagers, but as they age their ideal gets smaller and more realistic. "Random testing" in bodybuilding is often in the form of a polygraph test, not a blood test. I remeber when the WWE (then the WWF) wanted to do a show in Portland, Oregon. They were asking for a waiver to Portlands 100% drug testing (blood) policy for exposition athletes, when they didn't get it, they cancelled the appearence. I read an interesting article about Flex Wheeler a couple weeks ago, his kidneys gave out and he wouldn't let them take pictures of him because he doesn't look anything like his public image anymore. He thinks the steroids accelerated a kidney problem that runs in his family, I had to wonder why he'd put himself though that if he knew he had a genetic predisposition to kidney failure to begin with. Some people are born with natrually high hormone levels, supposedly Lou Ferrigno has a very high "natual" hGH level, but look at his nose. I'm sure he's used other forms of chemical assistance as well.

Interesting info.. I wanted to be oh so large too.. but as you get older you might want to do more activities. Being as big as those guys is limiting. I went hiking in Yosemite National Park, CA last summer. Never saw a Jay Culter up there. I saw one bigger guy but he wasn't pro stature. A while back I read an article about Jay Cutler. He said if by 32 he wasn't out of the pro competitions, he was crazy. Meaning, he wants to pursue other activities like a family and business and such. I'm sure bodybuilding and fitness will be in his life 100% but there's no need to be 300 lbs of solid muscle when it takes so much work to do so and really.. You eat, you sleep, you train and you repeat. No slacking off. After a while, you figure you need to take a vacation and not worry about a little muscle loss.

I remeber that one of the things that started to cool my ambition to become the size of a Volkswagen was when I saw an interview with "Tower" from American Gladiators. This man was like 6' 7" and 320 lbs of pure muscle. They asked how much he ate every day, and he said about 7000 calories. It got me to thinking about MAINTENANCE. I mean, that's a LOT of food, especially if it all has to be nutritionally top grade, which of course it did. And where did he buy clothes? I'm sure everything he wore was custom made, and I don't have that kind of money. In the end, do you want the HUMMER that's going to suck up a ton of gas, and cost you a lot in repair bills, or would you prefer a nice Lexus? Utimately, your body is for getting around and doing stuff. You want to be able to get around and do stuff without having to stop every 90 minutes to ear a chicken breast :) Of course, people DO buy Hummers in order to feel big and tough and safe and intimidate other people, and a lot of guys want to be huge because they think it will make them cool and popular and sexy. But I have met pleanty of shy or obnoxious or generally unattractive bodybuilders who people didn't want to be around. If you're trying to get big to improve your social status, there are other faster and more effective ways of doing so.

I think you were misinformed. What Flex has said is that he doesn't think that bodybuilding contributed to his disease since it was genetic. D

Well no offense guy but, if you have to ask if those guys use Steroids than you have a looooot to learn because all of those bodybuilders use steroids for many years, many of them dont even cycle it and if then for not a long time, steroids play a big role in a Pro-bodybuilders life just do some research,
Bodybuilding is my Religion...The Gym is my Temple...The DB's my tools of prayer... Height: 5'11 Weight: 218 BodyFat%: 14.12 (Just ended Bulking Cycle) 19 years old, Steroid Free.

The question was can you become as big as those bodybuilders without the use of steriods, not do you think they use them. I dont think most of the forum users are that gullible. Plus djduhon was referring to Flex's kidney disease and the fact that he didnt think steriods caused his ailment. So perhaps you should practice what you preach and do the research and read the entire thread.

you add steroids to great genetics and put those individuals all over the magazines and it doesnt make a good and actual picture of bodybuilding.

I think you were misinformed. What Flex has said is that he doesn't think that bodybuilding contributed to his disease since it was genetic. The newspaper article I read said he thought the steroids caused the kidey problems to happen earlier in life than they would have otherwise.

And what we all know.. those who are informed... Is that Flex has the genetic disease.. but it's like a bad liver.. drinking a lot of alcohol didn't cause it.. but it sure can speed things up. I saw him at the Mr. O 2003.. I had to do a triple take. He didn't seem to be any more then 190 lbs.. probably was.. but I never ever would have guessed that 1 year ago he was a competitor.

It's funny how this question ends up on every bodybuilding forum I've ever browsed. EVERY single one.
