Powerlifting Comp in 4 Weeks
-
Monday, September 29, 2008 12:25 PM
( #1 )
So I'm going to do my first powerlifting comp in 4 weeks. I'm going to be at 181 and my numbers aren't great, but hopefully it will be fun anyway. The routine I'm doing now isn't really a powerlifting routine, but I've been making pretty good gains with it anyway. Should I switch to more of a powerlifting routine or just keep going with what I'm doing. Any other general tips/advice would be much appreciated too. Thanks. Also, I'm not that excited about having to wear a onsie, but I guess I'll have to get used to it.

Wow, that's awesome. Well, it's your first competition and it's only 3 weeks away now, so I would just say keep doing what you are doing and maybe focus on powerlifting before the next comp. Good luck!

My current routine is an upper body, lower body/back split. I work out 6 times a week so I do each day 3 times/week. Upper body Bench press* DB Military Press DB Incline* Some sort of biceps Some sort of Triceps Flies* Lower/Back Wide Lat. Pulldown* Squats* Bent Over Row* Deadlifts Seated Row* I do 3 sets of each except for deadlifts, which I do 4 sets of 3,3,1,1. The ones w/o a star I just do 3x8 and the ones w/ the star I do 3 sets of anywhere from 12 to 2 reps. I have a 4 week cycle in which I rotate what reps I do for those exercises. My lifts aren't as good as I had hoped, but I am going to go for 295-315 on bench, 315 for squat, and 415-425 for deadlift.

That's a very good bench press there, around 145 kg.

Thanks, I'm kind of ashamed that my squat is so close to my bench, but I just started them somewhat recently.

Seriously Good luck! I am not the person to tell how how to train for that. Safe to assume your are reducing your rep range as you near the contest, in the hopes of pushing your one rep up, with you at a near max out shortly before the contest? high set volume less rest?

Thanks, and I am tapering down to lower reps so hopefully I can peak at the competition.

I got first place in the 181 juniors division. Booyah! My lifts were 325 squat, 275 bench, and 430 for deadlift. I probably could have gone 15-20 pounds heavier on squat. I missed my second attempt at bench (for 275) because I moved my foot, so I just did it again on my third attemp. On deadlift, I didn't know it at the time but the state record is 430 or 435 for deadlift, and I definately could have broken that or at least tried, but I did not know. Oh well, it was a lot of fun though.

Thanks! It was at Core 24 gym in Seneca, South Carolina. It was pretty small, but I'm definitely going to do it again.
