Hey, I am interested in Powerlifting. I like training at home so I was thinking about getting a smith machine to work on my squat and bench press(because I won't usually have a spotter). My question is is training on the smith machine essentially the same as training with just the bar and a spotter like at a powerlifting competition? If I can bench press 205 lbs on a smith machine does that mean I can bench press 205 with just the bar and a spotter also? It seems to me like it would be the same thing since the only difference is that on a smith machine they have a pole that keeps it in line. Im a noob at this stuff so I really don't know.

Using a Smith machine is nothing like doing free weight Squats and bench. If your just starting you wont be doing heavy enough weitght to need a spotter. I say if you have the money for a Smith machine you should be able to get yourself a power rack and an adjustable flatbench.

Thanks for the info Goldenfrog. I think I'll get a power rack.

It is nothing like using just the bar, as you need more stabilizer muscles to use just the bar for bench and squats, but it does help with safety alot.

Exactly- To be more precise, when you do an exercise like squats in a smith machine- The machine keeps the weight nice and stable while your legs and lower back get a nice workout. When you do the same exercise but with free weights, all sorts of other muscles come into play to keep your body balanced with all that weight on it- These stabilizer muscles miss a hell of a workout when you use the smith machine, and as a result, they end up relatively weak. So, if you could bench 205 on a smith machine, keep in mind- That's only on a smith machine. I wouldn't attempt lifting that weight without the smith, since your stabilizer muscles wouldn't be up to the task at all, and you could end up injuring yourself.

I have to teach my stabilizers all over again on bench, cause while doing 140, the stabilizers are a bit shaky. Shouldn't take long though.

Just did legs today, and man is it easier to do 225 for my squat workout with a free bar, instead of the smith machine, i get way more tired from using stabilizers but it lets you do a better natural movement then the smith machine.
