Possible without protien shake?? - Wednesday, June 10, 2009 7:59 AM ( #1 )
According to the 1gm/lb rule i need 176 gms of protien.
In a day i have around 8 egg whites,2 glasses milk =600 ml approx,
150 gms chihcken as the major sources of protien

These come to around 32gms from eggs (4gm /egg white)
around 10gms from milk
and 40 gms from chicken
10 gms from yogurt plus other things i eat in the day
making it around 92 gms/day approx
still only equal  half of what I need.

This means without the protien shake ,that too 2 in a day i cant reach my goal of 176 gms/day...
Which makes it almost impossible for someone to do proper bodybuilding  without whey!

Am i wrong somewhere or is it true??

You don't need protien shakes.  That's why it's called a supplement.  It supplements your lack of protien if you aren't getting enough.

is the 1gm/lb a little overdone??

I ate a 540 gram steak for a snack last night after getting in from work. That's ten times more protein in one snack than your daily intake from chicken. Plus, it has all the other goodies of blood, grizzle and taste you dont get in a milk shake. It is possible.

Is there a reason you can't get the shakes then?  Money an issue or something?

Excuse my previous response, the main point was it seems that you do not eat a lot and if you could squeeze in a little more I am sure you could reach the amounts you want. Are you on a tight budget for food? If you could spare more cash you should be aiming for around six small meals a day. If you are not already using them, I think you might find the websites nutritiondata.com or fitday.com useful to find which foods available to you are best to focus on to get maximum protein for your money. Usual choices are fish, soy, eggs, meats and cheese. The lists are mostly western foods but the most useful thing about them is that you can make sure you are getting a good balance of all nutrients and encourages you to try harder to make up for deficits.

If you want to take it seriously then you need to priorotise. There's nothing wrong with going out for a drink with mates - infact its healthy (socially), but you can't complain you don't have enough for whey when you can simply cut back on your expenses on things like drink. Take it seriously or you wont get anywhere, besides there's nothing stopping you going out with mates and having a glass of orange juice or water, surely alcahol is not so important to have a good time that it's actually a toughy choosing between it and protein.

Keep in mind that 176g may seem like a lot.. but spread out every 2-3 hours in 6 meals or more.. it's only around ~30g per meal.  Which isn't hard to do.

#1 problem when it comes to eating is people trying to slam it all down in one meal.

Break it up, multiple times per day at smaller meals and it's not such a daunting task.

If you do start the shake route.. try not to get more than 20% of your daily protein requirements from a liquid source.

If alcohol is where a lot ofyour money is going, then that means you're drinking enough to totally negate your workouts in the first place. No point in working out if you're gonna drink regularly. If all you're going for is a light buzz, then its cool I guess. (Assuming you're not cutting calories and are just working at muscle).

Dont get me wrong, it IS healthy to let loose every once in a while. My last final exam is tomorrow and I plan to get crazy drunk on Friday to celebrate, but this is just an occasion. Whey is way too expensive to just waste by not doing what it takes to build muscle.
