Possible to get a brain aneurysm from deadlifts?
-

Long story short, Ive been doing the deadlift quite exhaustively lately, once or twice a week and I guess my nervous system was taxed out. I was really tired towards the end of my sets and had a piercing headache with each rep, and on one of the reps I forgot to breathe and held my breath in while coming up, AND I had a really tight weightbelt on and something just popped in my head. Later on, my nose felt weird and I could smell blood up in my nose. So my head really hurts when I point it downward from now and I feel woozy and weird a lot. Plus my nose feels like its gonna burst at any second. Ive read nosebleeds can happen during deadlifts, but two days later my head and nose still feel weird and Im afraid I could die any second from a brain aneurysim. Rationally, Im probably overthinking it, but thoughts? This ever happen to anybody?

I myself experienced horrrrrible headache's while lifting before after a 20 rep set of deads and continued for like a week. they were so bad i couldnt do anything for an hour after it happened i never got that blood smell or anything. but i think the reason for mine happened to be be allergies. that is what someone suggested to me and i was forgetting to take my pills so it made sense. once i started taking them again it went away. Idk if its the same situation but get some zyrtec or something and see what happens

Doctor first.. But I'd say you are just worrying yourself cause I get stuff like that a lot when rack pulling.

At one time I was actually thinking of starting a thread about whether weight lifting poses some immediate health hazards. What happens in your body when you're holding the breath and hoisting several hundred pounds? Does blood pressure skyrocket? Could you blow a vessel, have a stroke, or a heart attack? As I recall the whites of my wife's eyes turned red (I think it was more than bloodshot) when she birthed one of our sons. Does lifting pose some risks (other than the obvious injuries)? I have had that back of the head/neck at ear level throbbing headache when chinning or squatting. Feels like I'm going to have a stroke or something.

Don't forget to keep yourself hydrated, always throw water down your gob, that's a big one. The worst thing I've had happen after a Deadlift was a sudden drop in blood pressure but that's about it. The thing is though, don't perform any exercise unless your body's conditioned to it. Don't start a beginner's program with intense Deadlifts, even if they're used to the exercise and can do it with spotless form, if they've been inactive for a long time then they're not prepared for a high level of intensity, it can be pretty counter-productive from a hormonal perspective.

yeah hydration and actually being conditioned for the weight your aiming for is key. Holding your breath while lifting heavy objects is natural. Its called the valsalva maneuver. It does create an immense amount of pressure but its to protect your body. I have never had anything like that happen to me, although I have passed out before from doing power cleans and holding my breath for too long. I cant imagine trying to squat 400 pounds, breathing in and out during the actual squat movement? or trying to pick up 500 lb's of the ground while breathing? At any rate, I would go check it out. It could be nothing...but it could be something serious.

Sounds somewhat similar to what happened to me two weeks ago with the DB challenge of deadlifts, after my 51st one started getting immense pain in my neck and back of the head, any time I would do any activity it would come back, and it lasted just a bit over a week. Not going to discredit what happened to you so be careful and if you feel like you need to go to the doctor don't hesitate. I also was somewhat dehydrated that day, and I might have forgot to breathe.
