Poll: Help the Lynx - Weightlifting injuries - Monday, May 23, 2005 11:57 PM
Like another chap recently, i have to request your help for an assignment/thesis. As part of my course requirements, I have to critically analyse and interpret a chosen topic relating any branch of medicine of my choice – mine being Sport medicine. We have to show some evidence of personal research & design an evidence-based management criteria based on that and the current literature. I thought id take a shot at that extra credit by conduction an online survey, in addition to my ground work here, by asking fellow DBers about their experiences. The more numbers I get, the merrier. There has been a similar post by myself a little while ago but i figured a poll would be an better way to do this. This is also like hitting 2 birds with one stone – it will also give me an indication of what sort of topics I can base future articles for this forum on.

This poll is purely for injuries related to weightlifting NOT sports related injuries. Depending on the response here, i will make another one related to sports injuries. You are allowed to pick more than one of the options.

If after voting, there is a particular topic/injury/rehab routine you would like to know more about, please post it and ill do my best to have an thread about it ASAP.

Thanks for your time.

I've injured my left forearm/wrist once. Could you add that option?

I've injured both my wrists - actually the tendon that runs on the "little finger side" of the wrist. Darn thing has been hurting for over 2 months now. Doc says rest it. Guess I'll be doing squats for a while since I can barely lift anything with my hands!

I tore my traps once....and once was enough. I've never been the same since. Although I recovered and have full use and flexibility, when I work the traps hard the injured side starts to spasm. That pain can last for days. Now I just take the slow and steady approach to building up strength.

I injured my wrist and thumb last month. During bench press I brought the bar down and halfway up I felt something in my thumb joint "pop". Due to the sudden pain I lost focus and the bar bent my wrist an odd way. Pretty painful stuff.

i injured my bicep on some DB bench presses. that was when i was relatively new to all this... i tried to force a rep and lost focus and dropped the DB in my left hand out to the side. my bicep was fine a week later, not all that serious but enough to teach me an important lesson.

i also injured my back once... i'm not sure how serious of an injury you'd call it... basically my back muscles were all rock hard and hurting because i'd been doing some heavy deadlifts and not stretching enough. but one session of deep tissue massage and a weeks rest got me back on track again.

Have just recovered from a torn muscle in my right shouder blade area - there had been some discomfort in the area for a while, mostly felt when removing the bar for bench, but not during the exercise. I had never felt any discomfort during any other exercise, but I was doing seated military press when I felt it tear. The funny thing is, I have taken some complete rest in the past & it never fixed the niggling aggravation in this area. After I tore it  & let it heal with complete rest, it now seems to have cleared up. I've also hurt my back in the past doing machine hack squats - the muscles on both sides spasmed & seized, & for a week they continued to spasm & seize. I've also had tendonitus in both shoulders a couple of years ago which put me out of action for about 8 weeks.

I've indicated ELBOWS in the poll. At times I feel that the tendons in the elbow area are at times stressed. Don't know if you would call that an injury because it really dosen't affect my training.

Peace

Once I dropped a weight on my foot...does that count?

Umm... i dont know. Its not a direct result of pumping iron.... but then again its still sorta related to lifting (or rather dropping) weights... so yeah i guess it counts.

Ill add the foot option to the poll now.

my back. It made a pop pop! sound when I went too low in a set of good mornings. I couldnt move the whole night, everything locked up in the lumbar region.

Canadian weightlifters, try GRAPES PLUS available at gnc. I was fine by day two.
