Pole Vaulting...
-
Thursday, March 17, 2005 2:56 PM
What exercises do you think I should try working out for pole vault?? I'm guessing it's legs to run up with the pole as well as overall strength (arms really) to hold pole straight and put it into the ground. Abs and arms to keep yourself straight and stiff when going up and a lot more abs to get yourself like inverted then shoulders, triceps, and maybe chest and some back to push off and get over the pole? Any good exercises you know that really work this form? I havne't attempted pole vault yet because my school hasnt recieved mats, but want to attempt to be very good when i can finally learn. My track coach says you have to have a lot of finesse and gymnastic skills help a lot. The fact that I can do backflips and backhandsprings and walk on ym hands and stuff probably will help a lot. Plus the fact that I weigh only 135 and can lift a lot for my size is hopefully good... since it's all in relationship to your own bodyweight. I don't care if you can do a lot of weight, it has to be high in relation to your own body weight, since you are pushing your own body over the pole and keeping yourself steady. Anywayz, any help would be appreciated. I really wanted to get into my elementary school where they have ropes and try climbing up and down with no legs, but I never got a chance. We are getting the new mats within a week or so anyway, hopefully I cna learn fast and do well.

Ive heard from many different track stars from my school that pole vaulting has ALOT to do with your abdominal strength.. So I would suggest working on your abs a good amount to get them as strong as possible.

Pole Vaulting has a TON to do with abdominal muscles! More so than upper body strength, I started pole vaulting this summer at fiberbenders pole vaulting camp in Penn. You MUST start doing crunches and leg lifts and sit ups. Speed does not have a lot to do with it although it does help, but some people at that camp could get up to 10 feet with just running two steps then planting the pole.
Pain is just weakness leaving the body
