Plate Dumbells - 4/22/2003 10:59:39 AM

Wanted to get everyone' s opinion on standard plate self load dumbells compared to hex. I currently use hex but the big boys get really expensive. I just wondered if there is a problem with range of motion or anything else with the plates besides having to load them everytime?

I' m starting to wish I went with plate dumbbells too. I just bought hex from 20-50lbs, and built a rack to go with it. So that' s $300 in weights and 8 sq ft of room. When I want more than 50lbs I can connect a couple dumbbells with U-bolts. Works okay for straight up-down movements like shrugs, but the lower dumbbell would probably crash against my forearm if I was curling them.

Another idea I thought of later was to get them in 10lb increments instead of 5lb and then use those 2.5lb Platemates or something similar when I need the inbetween weight. Ankle weights might fit around the ends also.

Ironmind sells a pair of bars for $190 that will take 10 10lb plates on each side.
