Ok i posted a quick thing about this in another thread. I do not have any illegal software on my computer or movies ect ect. But this morning i got an e-mail from my service provider and the motion picture association of america saying i have an illegal copy of spiderman 3. Now i dont have any such movie on my computer. Also it gave the I.P. address of the computer i guess and it's different than mine.
So my question is wtf? Obviously there is some sort of mix up or something, is there an issue should i e-mail them back ect ect?????

Most likely someone downloaded it through your connection.
Do you have a wireless router? Is it secure?
I know one time someone took money from somewhere through my uncles computer and like 6 others.
Tell the company to do a backtrack, and that the IP isn't your computers IP and you've never downloaded any illegal software.
Tell them to launch a police investigation if they'd like.

yea we have a wireless-n router which isnt encrypted, so that must have been it, i dont know how any other way. But wouldnt the I.P. addresses be the same though?

No. All computers on a wireless router have a different IP.
Get an IP tracker, and find out where the computer is/was when it had that IP. If it's your neighbor show them and show them the letter and blackmail them.

you're in college right? Are you in an apt complex? I'm in one, and was mooching off a neighbor's wireless without them knowing until i could get my wireless hooked up

ok so i went and looked up the I.P. address that they gave as the one that was downloading the software and it came up at as the country of origin of poland and POlish telecom lol. Just to make sure the tracker thing was correct i put in my I.P. address and everything showed up correctly.
So wtf??? lol

see i would but for some reason when i do i can't connect to it even if i put the password in, ive done fresh installs of windows and it still didnt help, so i dunno

Set up your router to filter by MAC address. It restricts outsiders from connecting to your network unless you enter their MAC address into the router.

what if someone wants to hack into my netwrok so be it i have absolutely nothing i reformat my computer every month as it is and anything that i do need to keep is back up on an external harddrive that i only connect when backing things up. Thats like the same deal with posting up a social security number...
